Oh well, I change my card and super-high end shockwaves is even worse :S
I change my old 9600XT for a 6800GS modded to 6800GT 256MB 256Bits...

AND THE SUPER HIGH END SHOCKWAVES RUN WORSE!

Lol xD I keep using the OGL, anytime that something big blows up, the FPS down from 60 to 2 until the explocion ends :S ... No matter if is the only object in mission :S, I still cant make use of adv_effects i see, I will need to remove those super high end shockwaves from that file.

oh, I using AA 4x and AF 8x from driver.

This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address occurred during the same week.  This is an ironic juxtaposition of events--one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication, while the other involves a groundhog.

Check your BIOS and make sure you AGP and everything is set up correctly, sometimes installing a new card can fubar those for some unknown reason. Also, looking at some reviews of the 9600XT, it ran OpenGL noticeably faster than eqivalent NVidia cards (namely the 5700 Ultra).

Weird... I'm using PCI-e GeForce 6600 (plain, no GS, no GT) with 256 MB memory, don't remember the memory bus (most likely 128 bit), and I can use adveffects without any problems... Actually, I can get playable frame rates with 8SxAA and 16xAF, but I only use those settings when I'm taking screenshots. Using 4xAA gives great FPS, undependant of shockwaves or beamglows... By the way, why the hell are you using the super high end shockwaves without a super high end system in the first place? I don't remember them being remarkably better than high end versions found in adveffects (IIRC).

Yeah everything is set up well...

I also try almost every posible configuration and RC 7.9 but is the same...

I dint try on D3D but wharever...

Actually i can play whiout the adv-effect which AA 8x AF 16x at constant 60FPS... which ambient factor 20, this game looks really good, and the constant 60 FPS is just great I feel that I not playing the same game that before :D

But still cant use the adv_effects for a reason...

Re: Oh well, I change my card and super-high end shockwaves is even worse :S
... I thought I was the only one that got that.

I have a Radeon X850 XT. (Another 256 MB beast.)
I can have a constant 60 FPS all the time, even in the biggest battles, but as soon as a shockwave comes up - WHOOPS! Even when hardly anything is going on I get ridiculous slowdown with shockwaves.

I'm using 3.6.9 RC7, with the latest media VPs and those patches. I'm using adveffects too, 1280 x 1024 res and all the settings on highest.

I'm very sure everything is set up properly, I haven't had any similar problems anywhere else, just in FSO and those shockwaves.

:(

The whole concept of using 80MB of texture memory for just one single effect, only because we can do that, is broken by design. So, there nothing wrong with your system.

Gotta agree there, a lot of textures are getting a lot bigger than they actually need to be. I'm all for looking nice, but not when it starts affecting frame-rates to radical degrees.

I feel that either some of the effects in mv_adveffects.vp need to be moved to mv_effects.vp, or (preferably) mv_adveffects need to be split into two. My computer (and the computers of many others) can handle ~70% of the effects in mv_adveffects.vp, but the other 30% cause such slowdowns that we either need to extract the files we can handle and delete the rest, or just delete the whole thing.

The problem which the adv_effects is the shockwaves and maybe the beams.

The other effects are ok... like the flak ones :D that impressive.

We've had this discussion before.

Unless you have a powerhouse of a computer alltogether, you're ****ed with the high end shockwaves. The low end or medium probably too, should work just fine.

The high end ones however, need to be taken out of the VP though. If they're ****ed, they're not supposed to be anywhere but the extra optional VP if you feel like experimenting and not hindering your gameplay.

Re: Oh well, I change my card and super-high end shockwaves is even worse :S
Actually, it seems that a "powerhouse of a computer" does nothing for this. The slowdowns with the 1024x1024 shockwaves occur regardless of the hardware configuration and should simply be removed from adveffects. I have extracted the orange version of the 512x512 shockwave into data\maps, so it overrides the bad one in adveffects.

As for the beams, there is indeed some problem with those too, but I think it's a game bug and is unrelated to the animated beamglows. The beams (even the basic ones) cause a massive framerate drop in certain situations and work perfectly fine in others. I have one mission where the framerate hit is easily reproducible, but I haven't seen it in many other places.

Re: Oh well, I change my card and super-high end shockwaves is even worse :S
Actually, I don't suffer any remarkable gameplay-hindering FPS drops with the shockwaves in adveffects. Some, yes, but not too bad usually, unless it's some huge ass explosion like the end of JAD2's disco show.

It's the particle effects that cause havoc on my GeForce 6600. And damage smoke. Every time I follow a damaged fighter spewing gas everywhere I suffer some FPS degradation.

But it's still very playable most of the time.
