First post, so pardon me if this is in the wrong place. (Gee, I sure hope I get a welcome beam.)
I'm not sure the spoiler tags work, but, uh: [spoilers]
I just finished Transcend, and I couldn't help but wonder exactly who the Transcendent was and where he came from. While it's plausible that he was created by some kind of military research into subspace - as I believe is suggested by Omega 1 late in the campaign - I wanted an alternative explanation, something that fit into the existing Freespace universe.
We know the Shivans have strong ties to subspace. Is it at all possible that they did something to Admiral Bosch after his abduction, something that made him into the Transcendent? They might've been trying to remake him in their image, to facilitate communication; or perhaps they were simply playing with him. Whatever their motives, could the Shivans be responsible for the Transcendent's twisted nature and his (apparent) desire to die?
Just a thought. I'm unclear as to the chronological relationship between Transcend and the main FS2 campaign, so it's possible Bosch was abducted AFTER the events of Transcend, which makes this whole theory significantly more implausible.

Any comments?

EDIT: Haven't finished Sync yet - I don't know if he'll make an appearance there, but perhaps there's more information? And of course, if Ransom Arceihn shows up to quash the theory, that's also a perfectly welcome outcome.
