Installing FS2 on a windows xp x64 machine...
Today I was feeling like playing FS2 after these many years... only to find that i cant seem to install the game at all on my 64 bit machine. Im certain the CD's i have work perfectly because i tried them on my sisters pc and they work just fine... and although i can play on that pc without any problems... it gets uncomfortable hearing my sisters nag because they want to use it. Anyway the problem with it is that when i try to launch the installer from the cd... it seems to "start" running but nothing seems to happen at all... its only until i try to either restart the pc that i get an error right before exiting saying something like "this application has failed to start due to windows shutting down" and i can see the installer booting up before my screen goes completely back and then starts to POST again. Installing the game on my sisters pc and then burning the folder in which FS2 is installed doesn't help either because when i finish copying the files onto the 64-bit machine and try to start playing... i get an error from the game saying I only have "1mb" of available virtual memory... in other words... the game thinks my computer only has 1 mb of ram... when in fact it has well over 3gb... Does anyone know how to remedy this? Has this happened before in the past? is there a patch i must download before being able to play on x64? please members of HLP I humbly ask for some assistance.

Anyway thx for reading... i apologize for it being such a long read...

I have actually heard about this problem before. I don't think there is much you can do to fix it for FS2 as it is a code issue.

However if you have everything already installed on your PC you should be able to upgrade to FS2_Open which has fixed the problem (and is about a hundred times better looking anyway).

Here's an installer (which should hopefully work on x64) which will set up Open for you.

thanks Karajorma... after installing from the link u gave me the game worked just fine... no issues due to 64-bit or anything, i really appreciate it. Although there is something thats bugging me....in fs1 i always loved how when big ships would explode you would see this giant shockwave along with all the explosions... i cant seem to see that in my game... is this common? is that meant to happen or is there something else i should do to get it to work?

thanks again for all your help, hope to talk to you soon.

In the launchers features tab check if you have JPG/TGA textures enabled. You should be seeing a shockwave like the one in this pic.
