Is there any way to make a ship drop mines?
I have seen that mines can be made through FRED, but I was looking for a way to make them as deployable weapons. I don't need proximity fused ones ( though that would be good ) but I want to be able to drop them ( and have the AI do the same ) to 'attack' areas and seed them with mines.

The mission outline would basically be seeding an area to prevent the passing of a capship inbound. Fighters will be deployed to cover / prevent this. Asteroids will create the choke point to be mined. Success means the capship gets battered by the minefield and can be finished off if need be. Failure means trouble!

Create a rear-firing weapon point on a ship, and create a dumbfire missile with zero velocity/a super long lifetime? Would that work?

What about spawning modified sentryguns as the ship is flying along, modified in that their weapons are removed and explosion & shockwave damage are ramped up considerably? Granted, this is more of a FREDing alternative if it otherwise can't be worked out, but it would do the same just with a bit more maintenance.
