I reinstalled the original Freespace last night.  I last had it installed a couple of years ago, and I could have sworn I was able to get it to run in relatively high resolution, maybe 1024 x 768.  Now, it will only run in 640 x 480, which looks absolutely horrible on a 19" monitor.  Is there a trick to get it to run at high res, or is that memory a product of my febrile imagination?

My OS is Windows XP Pro SP2.  Not sure whether the other specs matter.

...Yeah, you have to have a 3dfx Voodoo card (or a card that can run Glide, 3dfx's version of DirectX and OpenGL )  There are 3dfx Voodoo emulators out there, but they can take some of your system resources whilst emulating, (just as long as there's enough to run the game, you'll be alright!) and don't always work properly...

EDIT: Of course, that is just if you want FS1 to work.  If you want to play FS1 using FS2 Open's engine (better graphics!), I'd use FSPort, see next post for how to get that.
PS I'd recommend installing from the next post, over fiddling with the emulator.  Once you have it (FSPort) installed, then try the emulators if you want to.

I must have been playing the ported version of FS1 using FS Open of some version.

... No, FS1 did support 1024x768, but Taristin from your other post may be right, it might only be a "stretching" effect.  But it was an option in the Launcher, I know that.

There is no JRE 6 released yet. The download version at http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp is JRE 5.0, Update 11. If someone has JRE 6.0, it is a BETA.

Okay, so Java SE is for developers, and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is for end-users?

As near as I can tell, Java2 SE is what used to be the Java Development Kit, or JDK. The stand-alone JRE is at version 5.11, or, in their weird terminology, version 5, update 11. It doesn't have netbeans or a bunch of the other fancy stuff that the Java2 SE deal has. It's just for running java applets.

-If you have the FreeSpace 2 Retail CDs, jump down to "Retail install" to save time, then come back and do number 4:
4th, download & run (double-click): http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/java/FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar
-Go to the "Using the Installer" section below (under the "Retail Install" section).
