Well I've just found FS and FS2 hanging about in my attic so decided to give them a whirl again, Was told by a friend to come ehre and ask you guys about the various things that I can download now. Any recommended downloads or anything that improves FS or FS2?

-prepare for detailess non-specific advice to get SCP-

its in the thread at the top of the page of the source-sode project forum. download whatever the link is for and extract whatever it is to where ever you have freespace 2 on your computer.

First off, hold off on getting things until someone with a higher post count or a moderator
stops by. I originally tried going to the SCP site and getting all the files, but some of it
was out of date compared to files here floating around the forum. I could point you
to some files, but even that information is likely out of date already. So it is best to wait.

Some basics you will need...

The Freespace SCP main files
Updated Media VP's
New multiplayer pxo file

You might mention if you are on broadband or dialup, because that will dictate
what you will want to get in the way of files. Some are very large in size, and thus you
would not want to try to slowly download them over dialup. Although this can be overcome
if you live near a restaurant with WiFi or another hotspot.

Mods or Total Conversions are a different story, and will need additional files to those above
in order to change the gameplay, add ships, etc.
True power comes not from strength, but from the soul and imagination.

ok

grab the mv_zpack
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html

grab the patches mentioned in that thread as well.

then, grab the 3.6.9 build and the launcher here
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/3.6.9.rar

then, make a folder in your freespace 2 folder called mvps  "...games/Freespace2/mvps"
and dump the zpack in there

then go to the launcher and go to the mod tab and select that folder
then go to the main launcher tab and select all the eye candy and stuff

then hit run.

if everything was done right, you should now be playing a very pretty version of fs2.

@Turambar: karajorma wiill have your hide.
@Eva02: make the mod folder called "games\FreeSpace2\mediavps"
It does make a difference, when you try to use other mods.
If you want, you can:
Download a full install suite from FileFront
Download a full install suite from Bittorrent
Download a full install suite using Turey's excellent On-line installer (but you have to wait until April 1st, as the bandwidth is exceeded for now)
Or, download the individual parts, like Turambar said.
If you have a decent download speed (DSL or above), I'd go with either the FileFront or Bittorrent options, or if you're not comfortable with those, try the on-line installer in a few days.  Links in my siggy for the On-line installer and Bittorrent and FileFront options.

I would get one of hip63's downloads or the Installer, then you can just get rid of the ones you don't want... that way you have access to the MODs.  :)
