Hi all, I just downloaded the installer and installed all the possible components for the game, but it seems my computer is having lots of problems with the files. I had no previous version of the game installed, I'm running XP, there are no spaces/hyphons in the directory, everything should be fine. Yet, when I try running the .exes, I have the following error messages:

Launcher.exe: "This application has failed to start because OpenAL32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

This is then followed by another message, 'Fatal Error: Failed to read flag file." But then the launcher seems to open anyway. 


fred2_open_3_6_9.exe and fred2_open_3_6_9_debug.exe:- Both give the first error message listed above, and refuse to run at all.


FS2.exe: "Please configure your system in the launcher before running FS2. The launcher will now be started!" This message appears even after doing what it said and using the launcher.

Followed by "Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a root drive directory!". Which is weird, since my directory is C:/Games/FreeSpace2.


Freespace2.exe: Opens the menu, seems promising. Clicked Setup, everything seems fine. Update and Readme don't work, but that's probably ok. Click Play though, and it Gives the same two error messages as FS2.exe.



Am I doing something wrong? I'm really at my wit's end here. Any help would be really great, as this game looks awesome and I'd love to play it.

Ah, install Open AL if you haven't already.   Did that fix it?

Exits are to your left and right, as well as to your rear.  Unfortunately, the airlocks are rather unreliable, and the teleporter only works inbound. 

In case a fight breaks out, there are flamethrowers under every seat, however, due to budget cuts, they are only filled with water.  You could try some of the projectile weapons in the weapons closet, but most of them are broken and are more effective as bludgeons.  The Plasma Rifles are in their own closet, and only olition , an admin, God, or the hyper-intelligent shade of the color blue can open them.

In case of a water landing, you can and probably will be used as a floatation device.  If you happen to be exploring the ventilation shafts for some reason (most likely because you are looking for a campaign you haven't played yet), and you come across a five-legged creature with multiple glowing red eyes, you've found Carl, our sometime resident Shivan.  Give him your lunch and back away slowly.  If he's not hungry, you might be alright.  If he is hungry, and he's in a good mood, then at least your death will be quick and relatively painless.  The SCP is all that is good.

Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ and the FSWiki are your friends.  Mention efF esS thr33 at your own peril.  And, however good it might seem, don't listen to takashi*, and don't efff with Goober.


*takashi seems to be an alright guy, just take his advise with a huge serving of sodium chloride.

Excellent, that seems to have resolved things nicely. I thought that file was one that comes with the game, that's where I got confused. There's an ".xec is not supported" message or something like, but it doesn't seem to do anything, the game works perfectly. Thanks a tonne! 

Also, rofl. A water-filled flame thrower would sure make my classes less boring...

No problem.  Check out FS2NetD if you want multiplayer... if you can't find anyone to play with, d'l a copy of hip63's SCP DVD (in my siggy, compatible with & including Turey's Installer), and give it to all of your friends.
