FRED2 Open 3.6.9 and some other versions won't run without OpenGL 1.2. Naturally newer is better, and I'm working on content for the latest official version, so I want that FRED2. So I don't know if other versions will run in a virtual machine, but 3.6.9 won't (at least in my Win2k VM.)
So I want/need to run fred under Wine (at least until such a time as the magical code fairies deliver a working wxFRED2 or similar) and it mostly works except for just two things. The first thing is that if the 3d compass is turned on the display is not correctly drawn (at least on my system, details below.) The second is that various other display elements are not correctly drawn, including menus, toolbars, and some text in editors (like the Event editor.)
If the 3d compass is turned on, it is drawn correctly (or close to it) but the editor view is not. What it looks like is that gridlines are drawn over things. I've seen the same effect before but I don't know what it's called. I tried to upload a screenshot to this forum once but I was told the space was full and haven't got around to uploading it to my site. (I'm on a very sad modem connection - over which I already downloaded 3.6.9 and the MediaVPs (3.6.8 Zeta plus 710 rars))
As far as the drawing errors; menus are not drawn until they are used, else they are black. Toolbars are not drawn until they are clicked in, or a menu is drawn over them (But in this latter case they disappear after the menu closes... usually.) You can tear off the toolbar and put it in the corner, which is what I have done. The area which should have text overlaying the field in the lower part of the display is just a black bar. In some editors text is misdrawn, for example if I right-click a SEXP and replace it, the original text will still be drawn until I expand the SEXP or otherwise cause it to be redrawn.
Otherwise FRED2 Open 3.6.9 Final seems to operate very nicely on Wine. I can run retail in VMware Server, but that is not very helpful (it was a good place to start.) In addition since I do not care about windows (sorry) and am doing all development etc on Linux anyway I would far prefer to get everything working nicely there. If anyone has any pointers, I would appreciate them.
My system:
Compaq nw9440, Ubuntu Linux (Feisty Fawn)
Video: nvidia Quadro FX1500 256MB
nvidia driver, version 100.somethingorother
Wine updated no more than two weeks ago, previous version did the same things exactly.
