MAJOR Problem with Installation of Retail Version of FS2
Hey guys....  I'm a HUGE fan of FS1 and just found a copy of FS2 on a discount rack for $1.99!!  Needless to say, I couldn't wait to get home.  But, once I tried to install it, I ran into a major problem...

I placed disk 2 into the CD drive and nothing happens...!!  Auto-run won't work, manually typing the run command won't work, and when I open my d: drive (the CD), I cannot access any of the files.  It's like the computer will not recognize anything on the disk.

When I double click on the setup.exe file, nothing happens....  What do I do...?  I'm out of ideas and hope this forum can help me out.

Thanks,

Dave

Hey, Dave!

Welcome to the HLPBB, you'll find plenty of friendly people willing to kill each other to answer your questions first.   :D You've come to the right place.

The community uses the FreeSpace open installer to get its FreeSpace running. Ever since Interplay went practically bankrupt, the community has been working with the FS2 source code to create its own, new-and-improved FS, the FreeSpace Source Code Project (SCP). SCP plays the same way as retail FS, with several optional enhancements. The FS Open installer can be downloaded here:

http://www.fsoinstaller.com/

This will basically allow you to run FS2 without the CD.

While you're at it, you may want to look into the SCP project in general. Their site is down for the moment, but can normally be found at http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php .

Best wishes and

:welcome:

The formats for just about all the files have changed since retail. The installer will grab all of those files for you. You actually don't even need a successful CD install to run this... just put the CDs on your bookshelf and let the installer do all the work.

On Fsoinstaller.com, go to Downloads and Click "Download EXE Installer", then you install the game from there.  You don't need any CDs but you will need a decent connection because it downloads the entire game.
