If Volition did FS3 and it was a spiritual successor of FreeSpace 2 but with all of the usual associated upgrades then I think that would meet my expectations.  That'd ensure that at least some of the folks who did the originals were still there and had the same concepts did the gameplay.  Story and the rest is important but a good editor, a good engine, and solid gameplay would make FreeSpace sequel a top notch product.

I suppose I wouldn't mind a spiritual successor. I'd prefer an actual sequel, for closure more than anything else, but a spiritual successor would at least not totally invalidate all of the community's campaigns.

hmmm.... what if there was a FS3, but it did not effect any post Capella campaigns? what if it was a shivan campaign, that let us learn more about the shivans, like back story that could answer all those questions, like "WTF is a shivan?" and "why did they blow up that star (that should have been binary star)?"

I was just trying to point out that we dont know what '3 would be about, it could be a long amount of time later, or some sort of back story about before the founding of th GTA, it could be anything. And it does not have to spell the end of this community

The world isnt ready for the return of the space sim just yet. I think its looking like the world is just booting up for it though. Peripheral gaming is hitting in a massive way, sci-fi shows like BSG, games like Halo and Mass Effect. But its too soon to call if it will definately return. Microsoft could revive the genre in one swoop though.

I have a fantasy where they release a new Sidewinder for Xbox 360 and PC for a revival of their franchises like Crimson Skies, Mech Warrior and Freelancer. Something modern in the way of joysticks, something that fits onto the lap but also a desk.

Once that happened, there would be a number of games to utilise it. Some more mainstream simplistic stuff, some hardcore. They have an official branded steering wheel nobody I know has. As soon as they realise how many franchise revivals they can do with a joystick they might do it (prays).

Don't forget intention of the FS legacy is MODIBILITY. When you change things instead of using resources exactly as they are you are going against Canon.

That said, as long as it was a solid storyline that didn't invalidate FS1 and 2 I'd probably love it no matter what angle they went with next.

Plus since no one here has made an "official" sequel with V's seal of approval ALL MOS ARE ALTERNATE UNIVERSES.

You do realize in the grand scheme of things you can have infinite alternates???

For argument if someone made a FS1 mod that has no Shivan return feel threatened by FS2??? Of course not that's silly.

No one is going to make a mod and then have people come out fo the woodwork scream at them "but that didn;t happen!" calm down, It's a fricken MOD don;t liek the premise don;t play it, but you have no right to decide what peopel what to make or not make for their enjoyment.

No one AFAIK has ever made a mod that HURT a franchise. (Does Takashi have one?  )

Anyway, did people complain when in that one episode the ENT-D encountered like 300,000 alternate version if itself? Crew mostly dead, Riker and worf with afros, one where the Borg never showed up, Hell I bet there was one with a crew of MUPPETS!

Now if someone were to make Fs3 (V or not) and proclaimed there is one canon no matter what fs1/fs2/ or fan mods represent, and the new product differs greatly from anything established before, THEN you'd probably see a lot of upset fans. Fans LIKE continuity, but that doesn't mean we are slaves to it!
