Why were there so many?

A wiring problem that managed to span across a huge number of MD-80 aircraft in American Airline's fleet.  The fleet was grounded for maintenance.

The FAA got caught with its shorts down, and now they are auditing many of the major airlines to ensure that they are following safety regulations to the letter.  American Airlines has had the worst of it, from what I've heard, though every carrier is dealing with the issue.
