Freespace2: Computers Space Goes BYE BYE
Why does Freespace 2 take up so much space by just adding PCX files and data tables?

What do you mean?  PCX files and .tbls are pretty small files, they shouldn't have a major impact on your HD space.

Try playing a game containing only one texture map or only a handful of ships and animations. It gets dull fast.

Delayed failure of the novelty effect, that's why, genius. Lots of stuff means lots of things to blow up and look at, which means you don't say "this sucks" and throw the CD away after 10 minutes.

Last I checked my FS2 folder took up 1.2 gb of space. :D That includes all the CBanims from both games, which is significant.

Freespace doesn`t take up any space with either of those. Everything is in .vp files. If you`re seeing lots of pcx and table files either you`re installing tonnes of mods (you can`t blame FS2 for that)  or you`ve got something going very, very wrong. :)

That was directed at anyone who is asking why FreeSpace uses so many files. :p

I should add that, compared to practically anything made recently, FreeSpace is tiny. As far as I can tell, all recent progs are a gig or more- FS is a fraction of that.

One thing that takes up a lot of space is the high resolution images. They should have made it so that the menu was always at 1024x768 or something but the ingame resolution could be switched to other stuff. ;)

1.61 gigs here. Of course, I have Inferno in there, which accounts for a lot.

Umm.. FS2 on full install takes roughly 1 gig for me.. (a bit more actually) (just checked 1.2 gigs)
(no mods BTW)

FS2 normal install is  <1Gb, IIRC. If space is an issue, then don't install hi-rez textures.

Perhaps it's time to consider upgrading your harddrive. ;)

For me it's 456MB and I have installed tools to FS2 directory (like VPView, and much more), and I have also MODs. I didn't install much when I installed the game, not enough space.

Well, mine takes up about 1.2 Gig, that's cos I only keep one MOD at a time, else they tend to start arguing with each other and overwriting each others tbl files

It was amassive game at the time, it's still a big game as they go now, but worth every damn byte :) hehehehehehe

You know what, I don't care what Freespace takes up! a 60 Gb and a 80Gb drive allow me to think this way...

But anyway get a new harddrive - then don't cost much - OEM anyway...
