Just a little something as an aside to the 'Spore + DRM'-issue...
... and an encouragement for people to get Linux. :D

Now, as I'm sure you've noticed, IE7 is released. Well, hurray. And now IE8 is in public beta. And here's little me, sitting with my mother's laptop (HP Pavilion dv1000, I have to admit the soundcard isn't all crap), embarrassed about having IE6 as the default browser. I mean, what's a guy to do? (Well, besides installing Firefox 3, which by the way is about 9 times faster in loading sites, perhaps not in loading the actual application.)
So, after installing FF3, I decided to see what would happen if I install IE8b2/IE7. ... Hey, you don't need to frown like that! It didn't work, alright? There seems to be some sort of monkey business, and the installation fails when it tries to install the language-pack. I've tried everything that should work - starting in Failsafe, poking around with the services (which reminds me... :nervous: ) - even running their little pet tool SubACL-something-or-other. The error-message? Found only in a mysterious ie8.log:
Code: [Select]
00:11.703: INFO:    |Inst. IE         >>> Waiting for Internet Explorer installation to complete...
00:11.797: INFO:    Process 868 created for 'update.exe /quiet /norestart /er  /log:C:\WINDOWS', starting in path 'c:\e3cbca48ec7894bffcd2fde7\update'
00:13.813: INFO:    Process 'update.exe /quiet /norestart /er  /log:C:\WINDOWS' exited with exit code 1013
00:13.828: INFO:    |Inst. IE         >>> CPageProgress::DlgProc: Received WM_PM_EXECUTION_COMPLETE, 0, 2
00:13.844: INFO:    Acquired Package Installer Mutex
00:13.844: ERROR:   |Inst. IE         >>> Internet Explorer installation completed with errors, exitresult=0x00000000, exitcode=0x000003f5
I'm looking through HP.com to see if they have a cure for this, but until something turns up, my mother('s laptop) is doomed to an eternity with IE6! And then RealPlayer isn't quite sane, either...
... You know, I think I'll tweak my signature a little bit. If you DO know how to work this problem out, I really won't mind if you don't tell me. :drevil:

RealPlayer?  You must be joking.

Firstly, HP is a terrible company. Particularly where computers are concerned.

Secondly, why did you mention Spore and DRM in the title?

The title for this thread is like Obama mentioning FS3 in a political debate.  It doesn't work.

That's a good one (and yes I know you were being ironic)

Installation errors in Windows don't usually mean a permanently broken GUI, but is a pretty common result in Linux

Mars: Really? Hasn't happened to me yet. Although something seems thoroughly buggered about my videocard-drivers (ATI)...

Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that in Linux, recovering from bizarre errors is usually not too difficult, just enter a funky command, maybe comment something out of a configuration-file somewhere, and (at least, for me) you can usually get back to where you started. Now it's impossible to install something MS made, in an OS released by MS, designed for this exact version, 32-bit CPU and everything. This is the first time this has happened to me.

Hm, further research suggests error 1013 has something to do with failed registry-writes. SFC did show 12 failed entries... Yummie.

BloodEagle: It was the last major topic I read here before posting this. MS being one of the more eager champions of DRM, I had a hunch this issue might kinda sorta have something to do with that. In some cosmic-joke way. But it's starting to look like that isn't the case at all.

Foxit is way better, and not 180 MB.

And RealPlayer should not be let near a computer. VLC FTW.
Gettin' back to dodgin' lasers.
