... and an encouragement for people to get Linux.

Now, as I'm sure you've noticed, IE7 is released. Well, hurray. And now IE8 is in public beta. And here's little me, sitting with my mother's laptop (HP Pavilion dv1000, I have to admit the soundcard isn't all crap), embarrassed about having IE6 as the default browser. I mean, what's a guy to do? (Well, besides installing Firefox 3, which by the way is about 9 times faster in loading sites, perhaps not in loading the actual application.)
So, after installing FF3, I decided to see what would happen if I install IE8b2/IE7. ... Hey, you don't need to frown like that! It didn't work, alright? There seems to be some sort of monkey business, and the installation fails when it tries to install the language-pack. I've tried everything that should work - starting in Failsafe, poking around with the services (which reminds me...

) - even running their little pet tool SubACL-something-or-other. The error-message? Found only in a mysterious ie8.log:
00:11.703: INFO: |Inst. IE >>> Waiting for Internet Explorer installation to complete...
00:11.797: INFO: Process 868 created for 'update.exe /quiet /norestart /er /log:C:\WINDOWS', starting in path 'c:\e3cbca48ec7894bffcd2fde7\update'

00:13.844: ERROR: |Inst. IE >>> Internet Explorer installation completed with errors, exitresult=0x00000000, exitcode=0x000003f5
I'm looking through HP.com to see if they have a cure for this, but until something turns up, my mother('s laptop) is doomed to an eternity with IE6!

And then RealPlayer isn't quite sane, either...
... You know, I think I'll tweak my signature a little bit. If you DO know how to work this problem out, I really won't mind if you don't tell me.
