how do i get 3ds max to stop auto triangulating stuff? its doin it right from the get go, like if i create a cube its already triangulated the sides (or atleast its showing the tringulated connections with out actually creating the edge)

Short answer - You don't. Max always autotris. Those dashed lines are where it will triangulate when you export the model. I don't think they show up in editable poly mode, if you just want to avoid seeing them, but they will still be there.

Short answer - You don't. Max always autotris. Those dashed lines are where it will triangulate when you export the model. I don't think they show up in editable poly mode, if you just want to avoid seeing them, but they will still be there.

And in the editable mesh mode you can choose the edges you dont want to see and set them to "invisible". You can then select polys more masively.

 
ya those edges aren't selectable. I dont have a problem with triangulation but i dont needa see it while im working =p

Its like its showing me where it will triangulate but i can't do anything with those edges... btw this is a fresh install of max, i dont recall seeing the "praposed" triangulation the first time i installed max

Try "autoegde" after selecting all edges.

 
im not seeing that option anywhere... btw those triangulated edges are only visible in wire frame, but as i said before i can't select the edges. If i select all edges it only selects edges that have been created

and select edged faces to see edges in render modes.

thats the same as F4 key. That toggles on and off fine but the issue is its showing me where it will triangulate and i cant find how to hide that. If i create a brand spankin new cube, convert to editable poly and have edged faces turned on, it shows the diagonals that would triangulate the cube and i dont wanna see that =p

I suggest you to convert your model to editable mesh. It's not as powerfull mode as the editable poly one but it's allot simpler.

 
i'll check it out but i seriously dont remember seeing the extra edges before

 
its still showing the triangulation edges as a mesh too

In 3dsmax version 7, editable mesh mode, you can select the edges you want to hide and turn them to invinsible.

  
thats not the problem =/ i figured out what it is. I was using the direct X 10 driver, i switched it to 9 and the triangulation lines went away. problem solved =p
