There is something on the CD called setup.exe, which copies the files onto your hard drive and configures the sound driver. I just opened the game exe after that and it worked fine.
It's something I suspected might happen a while ago. Apart from getting more realistic in visuals and sound, gameplay would get to a point where nothing was innovative anymore - and the originals would still be the best. 
You are probably right about that; all the good ideas have been taken and done to the death by now, and everyone likes the innovative originals that started it all.

One problem is that there are very few adventure games these days, which I like quite a bit (especially sci-fi ones), so I tend to stick to the old ones on that front.
