OT- Can anyone figure this out?
It's something I suspected might happen a while ago. Apart from getting more realistic in visuals and sound, gameplay would get to a point where nothing was innovative anymore - and the originals would still be the best. :)

There is something on the CD called setup.exe, which copies the files onto your hard drive and configures the sound driver. I just opened the game exe after that and it worked fine.

You are probably right about that; all the good ideas have been taken and done to the death by now, and everyone likes the innovative originals that started it all. ;)

One problem is that there are very few adventure games these days, which I like quite a bit (especially sci-fi ones), so I tend to stick to the old ones on that front.

The problem here is that as a collective whole, gamers, particularly PC gamers, don't want innovation in gameplay, they want innovation in two areas: Graphics and Multiplayer and this is exactly what the publishers are providing. Any company who tries to fly in the face of this trend usually always gets met with bad reviews and poor sales.

I suppose so. Maybe I'm a nostalgic idiot, but I guess I'm one of the collective few who value innovative gameplay. Maybe because I can't afford the hardware needed for better graphics and don't have the connection (quite possibly won't for many years to come) to enjoy multiplayer.

But I must agree with you... whoever tries to fly in the face of mainstream trends does tend to shrivel up and die in very, very dry winds. :(
