Hello guys, I was woundering if older versions of awakenings, warzone, operation templar, etc... were still available for retail FS and FS2 (not SCP or the port)?

I'm gonna stock up a few retail campaigns, but I don't have the CPU power yet to run SCP and the port.

FSO isn't that resource-intensive. The MediaVPs, maybe. But just the FSO game engine, no. I'd also dare to say that FSPort as such isn't a killer either.

As such, I was woundering, for instance, the version of awakenings proposed by the FS wiki is marked E meaning it's compatible with both FSO and retail. So if I download awakening from FSmods, I should be able to play it in retail, no? (the same question applies to other campaigns also).

By that logic you are not able to install any campaigns either. Since the simplest method for installing FSO is to just get the latest nightly build and the Launcher. That's it. If there are other issues, no biggie. No one demands anything. But I'd really recommend FSO. Makes mod handling so much easier as well.

Yes. I looked up the release thread and Awakenings is retail-compatible. But it requires FSPort.

I clearly understand that! Even though I'm quite satisfied with retail, I'll go with the port ASAP.

However, I didn't quite get that last bit: regarding awakenings: If the campaign is retail compatible, why is FS port needed? Also, in that case, do you know where might be the FS1 awakenings?

Because the version at FreeSpaceMods, released in 2006, is for FS2. It is FS2 retail compatible. It doesn't require the FSO engine, it runs on the retail FS2 engine. But it still requires mods, or FSPort to be precise. And FSPort is also retail FS2 compatible. Just that the installation differs a bit compared to how it is done with FSO.

There was a link to the site of the original author (Awakenings was originally for FS1), but apparently the site has died and the domain has been hijacked. If the FS1 version isn't at FreeSpaceMods, I don't have the foggiest about where it could be found.

Just to clarify:

Freespace Port (FSPort, or just Port) = Mod for Freespace 2 retail.
Freespace Open Source Code Project  (FSO SCP) = New .exe that can run unmodified retail data, or any mod.
Media VPs (MVP) = Mod that enhances FS2 graphics and requires FSO. Resource intensive.
Freespace Port Media VP (FSPort MVP) = Mod that enhances FSPort graphics and requires both Freespace Open and Media VPs. Resource intensive.

So, in summary, you can do everything you want with FSPort in either FS2 retail, or FSOpen, on any computer that can run FS2 retail. The system requirements only come into effect when you want to use the Media VP enhanced graphics.
