Freespace 2 Installation Problem
I can't install Freespace 2 on my PC because of the following error:

ComponentMoveData error:

Media Name: data
Component: Disc 1e - misc\Mindspring
File Group: Mindspring
File: _SETUP.ILB
Error Number: -106

My specs are:

Compaq 4090US
900MHz AMD Duron
384MB RAM
GeForce 4 MX 440
8X CD-RW
25GB Hard Drive
Windows XP Pro

Anyone know what I can do to get it to work?  Interplay support is taking a while, and de-fraging my hard drive doesn't work (didn't really expect it to).

At the risk of stating the obvious...there is enough space on your HD for it to install? :o
Oh yeah, mustn't forget...

Shotguns are...were...under the seats, exits were removed in order to lower the costs of padding the walls, avoid getting in trouble with the big bright glowing ball that calls itself "Thunder", and always remember to call the AWACS "Steak" *runs* :D :D :D

I have a little over 5GB left on my hard drive.  If that's not enough, that's really messed up.

I must play Freespace 2 soon...

5Gb's plenty of space.

You have admin privileges right?

Tell me when the error pops up. I installed XP a week ago and I think that I had the same problem.

That error means that the CD drive is failing to copy one of the files to your hard drive. Probably a scratch on the CD itself is causing this.

The file it's copying is absolutely unneeded to play FS2 anyway (it's a signup to an ISP option) so if you can complete the install without it don`t worry, the game will work.

If not maybe you can try manually copying the entire CD to your HD and installing from there. I think I`ve heard of people getting that to work.

Well, when I want to do a full install, it comes up when installing the tech room animation files at the 66% mark.  When I try a basic install (none of the animations, hi-res artwork, etc.), it comes up at the 99% mark.

I've tried again with my screen saver off, all other applications off and as many processes as I could stop, well, stopped, and it still doesn't work.

And yeah, I have full admin privileges.

Yeah, I thought it might be that (mindspring sounded really familiar).  I haven't found the option to not install that file, though.

I tried that, but I get a "Error Copying File or Folder" window that says "Cannot copy data1: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)" when I try to copy the 604MB data1 cabinet file.  I tried exiting all other programs and then stopping every process I could stop in the hopes that somehow, doing all that would make the file copy onto my hard drive before the "error" comes up.  That didn't work.

And in case it matters with installation, I have all the latest drivers, security fixes, etc. installed.

It sounds like you`ve got a scratch on the CD. If it's failing at 99% the possibility is that all the files are already on your hard drive (try looking in the directory you told it to install in) You`re looking  for FS2.exe (or freespace2.exe so you can setup)

You can later install all the missing files and it will act like a full install.

Best thing you can do though is to get another copy of the disk.

I had that exact same problem when I reinstalled FS2 onto WinXP Home. So I went to custom installation, got rid of all the tech anims, and the cmbrief anims, then it installed fine. Then just manually copy the VPs to your HD. As for the 99% mark... whats the very last thing that it says its installing?

Ah, that's not good.

I checked for any files that might be on my hard drive, but there were none.

Oh well, I guess I'll be sending the disk over to Interplay...

Problem Solved.

I finally managed to get the game installed by directly transfering the data1 file onto another CD.  I have no idea why that worked and copying it to my C drive didn't.

You may still have corrupted data on the CD.  I got the same error when this happened to my CD so I just didn't install the affected areas(act 1 and 3 briefings).  The game would work until I got to a spot where it needed to load a messed up file, and then it would freeze.

Unfortunately, I cannot truely enjoy this masterpiece until I can create a pilot, view all available campaigns, and use the mission simulator without the game closing itself.

It may be installed and patched up to v1.2, but it doesn't really work right just yet.
