ok please dont shout but what do subsystems do ?

my thought is that they in some way control the systems of the ship ie weapons , sensors etc

if this is so then why in some missions do the systems continue to work after the subsystems are dead ...

is this because its a pain in the ass to fred for these eventualities or am i just going to get slapped if i continue with this line of thought

i just want to know thats all

Weapons - when destroyed, capship turrets fire less frequently and less accurately, and fighter weapons cannot fire
Communications - when destroyed, fighter cannot send nor receive messages
Sensors - when destroyed, fighter cannot target ships
Navigation - when destroyed, ship cannot jump out (only if AI Profiles entry is active)
Engine - when destroyed, ship cannot move nor turn
Hangar - when destroyed, capship cannot launch fighters

All other subsystems (ie. Reactor, Bridge, etc) have no effect unless something is triggered upon their destruction in FRED, such as the 'Crystal' subsystem on the Shivan Comm Nodes in "Into the Lion's Den" (triggers self-destruct)

Well I've had weapons die in a fight because that subsystem got knocked  out, engines cut off, targeting disabled (sensors), and no command messages getting through (communications). These were all random moments while playing any mission, so they didn't get scripted in.

Navigation dying doesn't seem to do anything though.

But anyway it's pretty rare for subsystems to get knocked out anyway (but this may change with difficulty settings, I havn't tested it), and usually only does when you're flying massive bombers with a stray fighter on your tail. It can also happen in smaller craft if you get hit by a beam in the wrong spot or get caught in a big shockwave.

ok so if you knock out the communication subsystem on a capship it shouldnt be able to communicate but will continue to communicate unless this has been fredded to do so ...etc,etc

Actually, I'm not so sure on that one.
I don't know if it actually blocks FREDded messages from being sent (as the player can't actually send messages, only give orders, which losing comms causes to not work).

You can still call the repair ship, though, which is good to help you get back in the fight if your disabled and your comms are destroyed (which actually happened to me once)
Fun while it lasted.

Being able to call the repair ship is probably just :v: being nice to us and not forcing us to restart if both those get knocked out. But yeah, it's nice if it just happens if you get speared by a stray AAA and lose your subsystems.

If the ship has some messages fredded and it's comm subsystem is destroyed nothing happens, the message get's sent normally.

I haven't tested what happens if that subsystem is destroyed and you issue orders to that particular ship.. will it get the order?

thanks every one im  probably looking at this from a too logical posistion ... for me if the subsystem is dead it shouldnt work , so unless the fredder puts this event in place the message will be transmitted

and all these questions stem from my messed up gameplay not knowing the solution to a mission so trying every solution ,

ie disable the comm they cant call in back up so i win the mission .;..but NOOOOOOO
