Author Topic: Some questions  (Read 2422 times)

As in title, I have some questions to ask:
Number 1: Is there any localization of FRED for Mac OS? Or a Java port?
Number 2: What about sound editing? What programs do you use?
Number 3: And about gameplay testing? How to do a decent test?
Number 4: Now, about rendering. What programs should be used to create good models?
Number 5: Finally, this time about Voice Acting. Have you got some text that I can use for training?

Thanks for answering!

Edit: Sorry for matters about question 4, when I wrote it was 10:30 pm here, and I was veeery tired...

1: No. FRED is Windows-only for the time being.
3: What do you mean? When it comes to testing self-created missions, my approach is play early, play often. And, of course, playing on different difficulty levels to make sure that the missions don't break on Insane, for example. Above all, however, hand them out to people who are not you, and try to learn from their criticism.
4: "Renderizing"? Not sure I've ever heard that word before. Could you clarify?
5: Try reading a book aloud. Or get the script to a theater play. Record it, and then play it back. Better yet, read/play it for other people, and learn from their reactions.

There are some suggestions for programs to use on that thread too.

About 4: An informed source told me that by "renderizing", you meant "rendering". Still, I believe it would be a good idea if you clarified your question. If you mean modeling, Blender, 3ds Max and SketchUp seem to be used by most people here. At any rate, this is a question best asked in the FreeSpace Modding board, as most modellers can probably be found there.

In regards to number 1, I know people have run FRED2_Open successfully in Wine on Linux, has anyone had any such luck with Darwine?  Please give details if so, of any issues you encountered.

Also, I hear Audacity is a good app for audio editing (site is down though).

I got Audacity for sound editing since much time, so thanks for confirming it as a valuable app.

About FRED, I've got a G4 Mac Mini, clocked at 1.42 gHz and Darwine cannot run on PowerPc macs. I'm trying to emulate a Win98 with Kju for Mac, but without any luck... I heared there was some kind of way to run Linux on PPC, but my hard drives seem to not support it, so I'm going to try with MacOnMac. I'll keep on working, but if you have other ideas, I'm glad to hear them!

Ah, then yes, you're out of luck for any real means of running FRED.  Your only other chance would be through full OS virtualization, running it in VirtualBox or something.  But that would be tough on that hardware.  I'd suggest Windows 2000, but I'm not sure how well it runs in VirtualBox/VMWare.  There is a way to run linux on PPC, but I think Wine wouldn't work so well on it in that case either (it would have the same bad QEMU support it does with Darwine).  Not sure about MacOnMac really.  But, there are linux variants that run on PPC, YellowDog is an old one, and Gentoo has some support for it too (but it's not very newbie-friendly).  VirtualBox might be a simpler overall solution than Kju.  Just throwing some more ideas out there.

So, I tried all of these, and...
VirtualBox: Seems to be Intelmacs-only, I found a link talking about "bochs", but it's Linux-only
VMWare: Tried to look into the site, but I didn't understood
MacOnMac: Already tried, I'll retry, but site seems to be down
Various Linux Builds: I tried Ubuntu for PPC and Debian, but when I installed (i'm installing on an external USB IDE hard drive) the OS it crashed on installing yaboot (maybe i should install it on my main internal hard drive? But I don't want to lose my OSX... Ideas?). Fedora seems to be PPC-compatible too, but it crashes randomly. I'm going to take a look to YellowDog, but it will make the same error as the others? You know, CD-Rs gets 7.70€ for 10 pieces...

Thanks for support, you're helping me so much : )

Last news: I tried again with MoM, but the actual release (0.2) has no Tiger (10.4.x) support. The Tiger version has only a bunch of file to compile.
Now, I can't compile files, because I simply don't know how to do this. If you could help with this, I'll be very grateful.
Thanks again to chief1983, who made me look more carefully to what I already have im my hands xD

You need to get Xcode 2.x for 10.4.  3.x runs on 10.5 but not on Tiger.  Xcode comes with probably everything you need to build the app for the mac.  Not sure it would help though.  Would be neat I guess.  That's a shame about VBox, I thought it could run on any platform with QEMU cpu emulation, guess not.  Unfortunately it looks like wxFred would be your only real option, that or go find a cheap Intel box at a garage sale or flea market and put Windows on that.

QEMU is another virtual machine software program I know of. I don't know if there is a Mac port or if it's compatible with PowerPC architecture. Do havealooksee though.
