What causes ....

the screen to freeze for ..... 10 seconds or so, and then it continues as if nothing has happened ?

Seems to happen in dogfights exclusively when ships are hit and hull is burnings, but only occassionally .... is engine trying to load explosion effects or something from vp ?

Is it when you get those damage sparks/smoke? That used to cause horrible slowdowns, but I thought it was fixed...

Missing files will definitely cause it.  If it's TBP I think there were a couple of fighters with bad effects.  Also check the tables to see what sounds it is using and make sure they exists.

nope, this is purely a display of the complete inefficiency of the particle system.
