OK I reinstalled FS and FS2 used Tureys updater to update, I have the Shevian update pack but it won't work at all and every time i try to run FS it says:

The application or DLL C:\Games\Freespace2\OpenAL32.dll is not a valid Windows Image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
thats problem one


Problem 2 is Shevians update packs are zipped and I forgot how to install them.
I really feel stupid and I heed help (again)
Please, theres a few guys at my work who will love yall forever if I can start playing FS again.

Get OpenAL from my signature.

Also get 7-Zip from my sig and use 7ZFM.exe to unzip the .ZIP files. Make a "Shivans" folder in your FS2 directory and place the unzipped files in there. Select the folder from the "MOD" tab in the launcher.

In that case just nunzip the packs to wherever you want, and I have no idea after that. I've never used SpS's pack.

Why do you need to use SpS' pack when you've already used Turey's Installer?

True. wolfen, don't worry about the pack. Just download OpenAL and it'll work.

You can transfer installs of FS2_Open simply by copying them from PC to PC. So there is no need to use ShivanSPS's update pack just to install on your friends machines if that's what you were thinking.

Just copy the contents of your entire Freespace 2 folder.

And there is especially no need to use Turey's Installer, since that way you'll surely redownload everything even though a simple copying procedure would suffice.

Edit: If you use ShivanSPS's Pack, without the patch, you'll have to remove OpenAL32.dll from your \Freespace2\ folder.

The reason I run Treys installer after installing FS, and before I try installing Shevians updates is thats how I did it last time I had to reinstall everything, I had FS1, and 2 with Tureys installer, I found eth Shevian update pack and installed it and FS worked, I'm a creature of habbit it works I dont change it.

I got open al , I've had 7zip since it forst came out, and I'll try installing them in a folder and see what happens, I had it working last year, now I NEED my fix again

But... bandwidth costs money. Time is money and we have neither. If you have a working installation on a computer and want to copy it to another computer, please, copy it with a USB stick or some other data storage device. Redownloading several gigabytes of data is still a horrible waste even if "it worked the last time".

If you have a working copy of ShivanSPS's pack, use it. And the patch. The pack already contains all the data and it doesn't download anything.

I can't put FS on another computer, my oldest doesn't want anything on his except War games he designs and my youngest is only into older car pictures so FS only goes on mine, I seem to be the only person in my house that likes a great game.

I downloaded Open LA and installed it stuill getting eth same thing. I think I'm going to try uninstalling FS and reinstalling it again and see if maybe I csrewed up somewhere.

Not to you, but for the hosters. People have to pay money for bandwidth usage when they try to host stuff on their servers, and unnecessary redownloads don't make it any easier. Again, if you have all (or even some of) the necessary files, just copy them to a safe place and from there to... well, whatever it is where you're trying to install FSO.

I'll remember to remove Open al from the folder.
But the bandwidth issue what I meant was I have everything on disk so I don't have to download anything at all from anybody, unless more updates come out after I get FS running right again .
I even have Tureys updates on a disk, don't ask how I managed to get that separate from the main game, but somehow my computer downloaded it separately a few months back when I updated.

GOT IT RUNNING !!!!!!:) Theres gonna be some happy people at my work Monday, I can play Freespace again.
Uninstalling and reinstalling it again did the trick. I installed FS1 and FS2, then made a folder for Shevians updates, installed those, and removed open al from my entire computer, reinstalled open al from the folder I keep it in and Viola, next thing I know I'm hearing that story about duct tape again

Thank you gentlemen, help liek I get from this board is the reason I've played Freespace all thease years.

Just to let you know, it's "Shivan's" and not "Shevians". Glad we could help.

oops, gotta excuse my spelling, I have big fingers and a normal sized keyboard, and I only use 4 fingers and they move faster than my eyes do. Spell check works just fine with Opera, but Shivan's, doesn't seem to be a word according to Opera, till just now when I made it learn that name
