Can't get to the docking bay screen
Hello!  I found out about freespace a few months ago, and it blew me away.  Then, last week, I cleaned out my old installation and tried to install 3.6.10, which crashes all the time.  I was able to create a player with the debug build, but now the game crashes when going to the docking bay screen (I think).

Well I don't have my glasses so I couldn't read all that but I did notice 16 and 24 bit color both should be 32.  Also do you have the most up to date drivers for you vid card?

Oh. My. God. Sorry to say this, but your video card is too crappy to handle the mv_advanced package. Delete it, then try again. If it still crashes, delete all vps in the mediavps folder except mv_music.

Also, try to launch the game at 1024x768 resolution, with 32 bits of color depth.

I changed that in ~/.fs2_open/fs2_open.ini to no effect other than changing what depth and resolution are displayed in the log.

It's probably also important to mention I'm running debian linux.  3.6.9 worked fine for me, and I miss it :).

Oh. Oooops. Should have caught that.

The problem here is that your card (or its driver) does not support compressed dds images. Since those are used all over the place in the mediavps, your card won't be able to use them.
The reason for using 32 bits of color depth is that using 16 bits will sometimes cause weird issues.

Does the same happen with one of the nightly builds?


PS: You should really go here and download the FS2 cutscenes. Put them in your FS2 directory.

Cutscenes are downloading :P.  It still crashes though, even after I found a library to support s3tc compression.  Any more ideas?  This seems like some other problem.  Are there other linux users around who have it working?  What should the directory tree look like?

As for the directory tree, that looks mostly OK, except for that mv_assets.vp that seems to have snuck into your root directory. That needs to be deleted.

Have you tried a nightly build? Or followed the instructions on how to make your own build here?

Also, is that an abridged log? Do not, under no circumstances, abbreviate logs.
