Colossal 3.6.10 Issues
Hey, all.

I'm installing FS2 Open on my laptop -- here are the specs:

Vista Home x64
4 GB of RAM
Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz
Intel Integrated Graphics Chip (4500MHD)

I can install and run FS2 just fine, thank you very much. The problems arise in the 3.6.10 media VPs.

I've narrowed the problem down to being in the mv_assets repository, but not much farther than that. A quick list of issues, both with or without the assets container loaded:

1. Missing Jump Nodes in maps (Non-assets). I can target them if I know exactly where they are, but I can't see them, not even in the target display.

2. Extreme slowdowns with smoke, fire, etc (Non-assets). FS2 Open with the VPs runs at a near-constant 45 fps, if not faster. I slow down to less than 25 when I get too close to a ship that has smoke or fire coming off of it. Thrusters are just fine. This also happened in the nebula to some degree while simply flying around or looking at certain spots.

3. mv_asset problems (trying to use assets). The files I grabbed have been from Turey's installer (crash at mission launch), the full zip (except advanced.vp, same problem, but with extensive hang), and the individual asset file (see #4). I have also gotten the patch from the 3.6.10 download thread. The vp's I am currently using to launch (core, effects, music) are from the second download.

4. Running but with extreme problems (With assets, only tried training 1). The last file I downloaded worked. The only problem is that if I am looking at a ship, any ship at all, the game refuses to draw the background, and draws every single frame without removing the last one -- sort of like the "hall of mirrors" in Descent or Half-Life. If I turn away from them, the effect passes and everything is visible. The HUD does not produce this effect.

5. Long load times when pressing commit (With/without assets). I'm not sure if this is universal with this update, but I remember that I could get any mission off the ground within a matter of five seconds on my old 2 GHz/GB RAM machine and 3.6.9. Is the 3.6.10 update really that big, or is something wrong?

6. Slowdowns in ship select and weapon loadout (without assets). The game slows down sporadically to about 15-20 frames per second while gearing up for the mission. This does not happen during the actual briefing. Models for ship selection are not active, only the standard graphics.

Keep in mind that everything else (except mv_advanced -- I'm not touching that on this machine!) works perfectly and is running. Effects load fine, music is good, and the mod starts up just fine. It's just those few issues above and the addition of 3.6.10 that muck it up. I'm considering downgrading to 3.6.9 -- though I don't know if they'll work with the 3.6.10 vps or the newer mods that came with the download (I grabbed everything from Turey's installer, unless noted).

Any help would be tremendously appreciated! :-D

Re: Colossal 3.6.10 Issues
I would rather recommend using one of the nightly builds, they are on average faster than 3.6.10.

Now, could you do us a favor and run a debug build with the mediavps enabled? Just run it, play a mission, maybe make a screenshot or two, and then post the fs2_open.log file from your data folder here.
Slowdowns when particle effects are on-screen are normal; FS2's particle system is horribly inefficient, unfortunately. When exactly did you run Turey's Installer? During the past few months, there were issues with it handing out corrupted mediavps and old, outdated 3.6.10 builds. Have you downloaded 3.6.10 Final and the associated Launcher 5.5e from the release thread? Alternatively, redownload Turey's installer, and run it again.

Good job E but you forgot the obvious make sure you video drives are up to date.
No-one ever listens to Zathras. Quite mad, they say. It is good that Zathras does not mind. He's even grown to like it. Oh yes. -Zathras

Re: Colossal 3.6.10 Issues
Thanks for the quick replies!

I ran Turey's just this past Saturday, actually. Just in case though, I downloaded the new executables, but to no avail. My video drivers are also up to date. The screencaps I took didn't work -- it must be engine based. All images are black. Does the "hall of mirrors" description work?

Glad for any suggestions. :-)

UPDATE: I switched the rendering mode with the assets installed to OpenGL -- everything works fine in the nebula missions, but not in empty space. Interesting. Again, any help is gladly appreciated. :-)

Hi, just a note that only the OpenGL renderer is supported, and in fact, DirectX has been entirely stripped out of FSO for 3.6.11
We really do need some screen shots for this one - just attach them to a post or upload them somewhere!

Thanks!

Here -- I shot a video of it. Read the description for more details. If you need anything else, let me know! :-D

(Note: If an error occurs, wait a few hours for the video to process -- I just uploaded it no more than about three minutes ago. :-P )

OF COURSE I'D FORGET TO PUT THE LINK IN

Re: Colossal 3.6.10 Issues
Bump (sort of).

I've also noticed odd audio effects after playing a few missions -- the speakers sound like a boom box would while someone in the room is getting a text message. This started in two key places, if I remember correctly -- both the first GTI loop and the Vasudan missions.

Nothing else has changed except that I'm now using OpenGL as a video renderer.

Anything at all would be appreciated -- I'd love to play with the 3.6.10 Assets!
