These people need your help (no not Haiti)

Alright, this has gotten next to no press recently, and it's frustrating.

http://www.sioux.org/

In the later part of January, a massive ice storm tore through South Dakota. The Cheyenne River Sioux tribe Reservation was hit the worst--even weeks later:
--Many utility and power lines are still down
--Water pipes are frozen, or broken
--As a result of the above, most residents are without power, heat, or running water

On sunny, warm, good days, the reservation suffers from 80-85% unemployment.  They've been all-but ignored by the federal government.  The reason the donate link isn't to the Red Cross is just illustrating how poorly-publicized this problem is.

What you can do:
--Donate through the link at the top of the thread.  It will go to an account established by the Sioux tribe. 100% legit.  Even if you don't live in South Dakota (or even the US), or have any Native American ties, any amount you can give will go directly to the tribe's reconstruction efforts.

--Spread the word.  Like I've said, this has gotten next to no press so far. The more people know these people need help, the better.

--Americans: contact your congressmen, local Red Cross chapters, and religious charities and get them involved in the relief effort.

--If you live in area around South Dakota, I'll be making a trip up this weekend to lend a hand.  Let me know if you want to join in.  Hotel reservations, food, and most other expenses are on me--just bring a few changes of clothes, work gloves, and coldweather gear for yourself--bring some blankets, shoes, water or canned food for the Sioux tribe.  PM me of you're interesting.

You'd think this would have gotten more media - reporters are always keen to jump on an "embarass the government" story, and the Katrina parallels here would be just that. It really does disturb me that a nation with the economic clout of the US (and yes, I know there's a recession on) can't even keep the power and water going to its own citizens, especially after what they should have learned in New Orleans.

Incidentally, major props for the willingness to get directly involved in disaster relief. :yes2:

Yeah, you'd think so.  I'm not going to start pointing fingers right now, since that's not doing the Sioux any good, but something definitely has to be done about the part of the US government responsible for handling Indian Affairs.

Total donations so far are up to about $6K.  We can do better--hell, if 25 HLPers donate $20 US, that number will be up to $6500.  If most of the regular GenDisc folks do the same, we can make that well over $7K or even 8K.

Besides, with tax season approaching..wouldn't it be nice to have something to write off?:)

Re: These people need your help (no not Haiti)
I hate to be that guy, but given the centuries long ass kicking my government has given these people, I don't hold out much hope of it ever getting much better.

That said, let's see if someone can beat my $100 donation.

I'm not much of the donating type, but I gave $25.

I wonder if this makes me a good person?

Re: These people need your help (no not Haiti)
Really appreciate it guys.  No matter the amount, it helps.  :)

Here's an update:
--Most of the power/utility infrastructure has been restored in the reservation.
-- A massive awareness campaign put forth by MSNBC and various websites set a goal of raising $32K by the end of the month. In 24 hours, Americans donated about $185K.  Every HLPer who donated is a part of that.  Well done, everyone.

What still needs to be done:

Despite the overwhelming support, the tribe could still use all the help they can.  Feel free to donate money, or send letters of support to the reservation and let them know people around the world are thinking of them.  Americans, continue to petition your congressmen and Red Cross chapters.  Get everyone involved.

Part of the disaster relief is making sure this never happens again.  We can't stop the weather, but keeping the reservations in the spotlight and building up their infrastructure can lessen the effects.  Continue your generosity. Remember, $185,000 already. :)
