Also, chances are, those huge beams which seem to do more damage than the 5 gigaton Harbringer bomb probably would make the planet extremely uninhabitable.

the makers of star trek have repeatedly admitted they often made up nonsense technobable just to get out of situations where they have written themselves into a corner so i have to side with snail

The Proycon Insurgency had both Terrans and Vasudans being descended from the Ancients.
