Installation, Updates & Getting Back Up to Speed
Okay, things have changed a fair bit since I was around here last, which would have been around three years ago.

Back then I used Turey's installer to get FSO 3.6.9 and I used it again about now to update things as much that utility can update them.

Having a problem now with my savegames for fsport 3.1.1. I can only view cutscenes that I have played through on 3.6.10 version, but the ones I had already played through on version 3.6.9 don't show up in the list of available custcenes in the tech room. Is this a version incompatibility issue or something else?

If worse comes to worst, I suppose I can just delete the entire game, download the SCP installers and reinstall the whole thing using those and then start it all over again, but that seems far too much trouble if it's not absolutely necessary.

Any suggestions on how to go about getting things properly back on track? Help from the more knowledgeable would be much appreciated.

Re: Installation, Updates & Getting Back Up to Speed
In theory, the 3.6.9 savegames should be compatible with 3.6.10.

However, it's been a while since the .9 to .10 transition, soooo I dunno.

One thing you should be aware of is that we're very close to releasing 3.6.12, which will be mostly incompatible with older savegames. It would be better and less stressful to get .12 now and start from scratch than waste time on .10.
You can get 3.6.12 RC3 here. Read the install instructions carefully.

In addition, I'd like you to generate an fs2_open.log. If you don't know how, read the FSO FAQ.

Re: Installation, Updates & Getting Back Up to Speed
Thank you! You just saved me from a lot of headache there. :D

Now, another few questions:

Do the new builds work with the old mediavps and other files? Because if so, then I'd only need to use them and not redownload everything.

Back when I installed the old version, I don't remember having installed FS2 from CD, though I do have the original CD. Should I do a full SCP install by deleting the old install in its entirety, installing from disk, downloading all the packages and then running an install with the latest thing?

If I need to redo everything from scratch, it's going to have to wait a while as I set everything up properly. If it comes to this, then by damn I'm going to go the full DVD All-in-One Kit route.

Re: Installation, Updates & Getting Back Up to Speed
Well, the mediavps have been updated for 3.6.10 (and there's an update for 3.6.12 just around the corner).

So yeah, you'll have to redownload those again too (Unless Turey's updated them for you).

Please run a debug build (with the mediavps selected as a mod), produce a log, and then we can tell you what you need to download again.

And I wouldn't recommend the DVD route. Those haven't been updated in ages.

Re: Installation, Updates & Getting Back Up to Speed
Thanks again. :)

Looks like an updated version of Turey's installer actually does update most files, so we'll see once that is done. After it's run its course, I'll post the log. Thank you for the warning regarding the DVD process too.

It's hard to get up to spec just by looking at the forums after three years of absence, especially since I have never been very involved with the community itself, so I really appreciate it. Helpful people like you are worth more than their weight in gold for any place like this.

Back then there were no reliable and legal distributors of FS2, so Turey's Installer included the retail FS2. Things have changed since then. Now we have Good Old Games, who sell DRM-free digital copies of old games, including FS1 and FS2, at low prices. FS2 was therefore removed from the Installer, since we'd like to support legal businesses and FreeSpaces' IP holders.

So short answer: yes, if you intend a complete reinstall, you must install FS2, and then either use one of the provided FSO installers or do things manually. Which also isn't that hard anymore.

Well, that explains a lot. I don't happen to have any objection to this development at all, since it is proper to pay for what you use if somebody made it and it wasn't a free license.

I have the original FS2 and I used to have the original FS1 + Silent Threat, but I've lost that box somewhere, so I shelled out for the GOG versions. Saving the same amount of money by skipping a couple of burger meals will just do my waistline some good anyway. Freespace2: Now with health benefits!  ;)

So I noticed. The instructions that are around here in stickies are much less arcane than the instructions that were around three years ago. An archaelogist specializin g in anicent Egypt is no longer required to translate the hieroglyphs.

You have a good memory. I asked just a few questions about a few fsport missions and some generics about the mediavps files and the mod.ini secondarylist vs secondrylist issues back in 2007 and you were one of the people who replied to me then. I don't even have an avatar here, so it's not like I was that distinctive, though if we have any other similar interests besides Freespace, you may know me from elsewhere.

Re: Installation, Updates & Getting Back Up to Speed
Whee! Took two days to update everything up to speed with the upgraded launcher and now I created the fs2_open.log file, so if anyone can check it over and tell me if I'm good to go for a 3.6.12 game, it would be appreciated. File attached.
