Is it possible to force Laptop to work as a second desktop monitor ?
Another technical question from Starman :)

Is it possible, that I make my Laptop work as a second Monitor for my desktop PC ? AFAIK it's possible vice versa, but my Laptop doesn't have the power to run the programm.

Here is what I want :

On my desktop PC are two Applications running. The first will be displayed to the normal monitor, and the second one should be displayed on the Laptop. Can this be done, maybe with an additional programm ?

The Desktop is XP Home, SP3, and the Laptop is W7 professionell.

I've seen some work-arounds that allow similar effects, but none that'll run well on xp or are available for less than you'd pay for just a second monitor. What two applications are you trying to run, and why do you need them both from the same computer? What are your lappy's stats, that it has win7 but can't outperform something running win5(xp)?

possible? yes.
easy? **** no!
and it would probably destroy the laptop.

of course you could terminal into the good computer with the ****ty computer. youd need a version of windows that supports terminal services though, i think xp pro does, as for vista and 7, depends on version. im not sure if the xp remote desktop is compatable with the equivalent on 7, but being pro it probibly supports it. you also need some kind of network, i use my wireless network, but for this application a nice gigabyte line would be useful even if its just a crossover cable.

i actually do this upstairs where my soldering table is, the laptop is not very powerful and has no usable storage. the only reason i use it is because it has serial and parallel ports, to program microcontrollers and stuff. but i store all my files on the computer downstairs. i only use the laptop when im working on electronics and need to pull datasheets off the net and get at code and run eagle cad on the more powerful comp. i use wireless and its sorta slow on the refresh, but it works.

Use Linux.  Connect the two computers via an ethernet cable.  Work some terminal-fu to get X11 to use the laptop as another screen.  Voilà!

In case you didn't already figure it out, this post is part satire.  Specifically, the part that says "Viola!" is satire.  The rest is serious, but "terminal-fu" is a gross oversimplification of the process, and therefore the "Viola!" part implies that the process is simpler than it really is.  But if you use Linux, it can be done without a bunch of soldering, as the previous poster suggested.

Hm, too bad. I hoped, it would be as easy as simply run a remote desktop on my laptop so that I can view the other PC's stuff. And I thought, when connected over Lan, I could see it in realtime.

It's for Eve-Online,  I want to reactivate my both accounts, and it would be more convinient if I would have both on screen on the same time, would be a little safer for my miner account.

Try ultraVNC, radmin, or Windows remote desktop. You may have to cheat windows that you have two monitors. Radmin able to connect to the management of one display on the Multi-display configurations.

Similar problems are solved under Linux in one command.

UPD: try google: windows seamless remote desktop

Viola is string instrument as well as a female name.

Voilà is an exclamation that colloquially means the same as "ta-dah!".

I wish people wouldn't systematically mistake them for each other. :p

It's not the accent, it's the diphtong - "io" vs "oi". In most cases the accent on the penultimate "a" is dropped outside pedantic circles.

The only reason I pointed it out was because it seemed like a systematic misuse of a word rather than meaningless typo - and fixing systematic spelling errors is as benevolent to you as much as it is for my blood pressure. But that is irrelevant for this discussion, so let us abandon this tangent henceforth. :)

I think VNC has a place in the solution to your problem.

VNC/any remote management software and any sort of game don't get along well at all in my experience. Same goes for X.

Re: Is it possible to force Laptop to work as a second desktop monitor ?
its all terminal services. and i dont think terminal services uses the remote video card at all, which is unfortunate. would be nice if the desktop was sourced from the frame buffer on the remote hardware, bit i think it uses some kind of virtual device instead.

Re: Is it possible to force Laptop to work as a second desktop monitor ?
The closest I know of is to fake a second monitor and setting up remote-desktop software that views only that monitor. That's a rather fugly solution as you'll now have an invisible and useless display when your laptop's closed. The advantage though is that you'll have keyboard/mouse control (though it applies to the focused window, so you can't type out something on the second screen).

You'd be better off spending a few dollars for a second monitor or computer ($50 mITX board, $40 chassis+PSU, $40 RAM, $40 HDD or $120-150 monitor)

Re: Is it possible to force Laptop to work as a second desktop monitor ?
I haven't actually used it myself yet, but have been planning to: zoneOS zonescreen. Do a google search. seems it uses a variant of VNC (or at least is compatible with it). Uses the network and a server/client pair of apps to do the extending, which means if you are a security nut, it might make you nervous.

Also, hey guys! Former lurker here, finally decided to make an account and actually contribute to something instead of just sit in on the conversations as a guest.
