How to disable HUD in "3rd person view"

Prior to FSO, when switching between the "first person" cockpit view and the "3rd person" ship view, the entire HUD was only present in the 1st person and nonexistent in the 3rd person. With FSO, the entire HUD now appears when in the 3rd person view. Anyone know how to disable this?

You've got a key combination to disable the HUD. I think it's set to Shift+O by default, but you can bind it in the settings anyway.

You can also use the free camera, and lock camera controls behind the ship

You'd still have to use Shift-O since some HUD elements will still be present in external view.
