So I got bored and did great on my Spring term grades (I got a 3.70) so I decided to reward myself for the good work and buy myself a little computer upgrade. The below is my old setup.

So I ordered, from Newegg, a Core i7-2600K, Gigabyte Z68X-UD4, and Patriot 2x4GB DDR3-1333. I'll post pictures of the upgraded system in a couple days.

Why such low-speed RAM?  You could have gotten 1600, at least, which is nearly as inexpensive as the 1333 variety, plus gives you more headroom.  (Of course, I'm the kind of freak who goes out and buys DDR3-2133...)

Nice :)

Finally got my system up and running today, am posting from it now :)

The Good : Windows 7 dealt really well with the change, only requiring a re-activation, despite having a whole new MB and CPU setup.

The Bad : I now have a spare i7 2.8Ghz processor, because of the Ugly.

The Ugly : ASUS put the power supply for the CPU on an opposite corner of the board to the power supply to the MB, the socket for the CPU power is still there, but it doesn't power the CPU. This was why I thought the old processor had died when, in fact, the power was plugged into the wrong socket...

Unless you are doing something incredibly RAM intensive, I'd wager RAM speeds are meaningless.

Because after I send in the MIR, it'll have cost me $49 for 8GB RAM. I was thinking of a Patriot Viper Xtreme DDR3-1600 CL8 kit as well as a G.Skill Sniper LV DDR3-1600 CL9 kit, but I couldn't justify the price of either. I'll take my chances overclocking with lower-speed RAM. It won't limit my CPU overclock either way.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking of buying a bottle or two of spray paint and giving the interior of my chassis a couple coats of black paint. That way, it'll match the new motherboard.
