Facebook "Like" button and Google+ "+1" button
Can buttons be added (maybe to the bottom of the page, someplace that's not obtrusive, but will be readily seen by all) to hard-light.net and also to /forums?

* jr2 wants to get m04r publicity for HLP

NO. NEVER.

There are several privacy concerns associated with those, things I would like to avoid. I mean, we have a G+ page and a facebook group, shouldn't those be enough?

NO. NEVER.

There are several privacy concerns associated with those, things I would like to avoid.

:nervous:  Like what?  AFAIK, all it would do is post to your Facebook wall / Google+ page that you like HLP.  Unless HLP was set to request permissions to post on their walls, which I don't think we'd do.  Right?  Or am I missing something here?

I mean, we have a G+ page and a facebook group, shouldn't those be enough?

The only reason I'm asking is because this would make it convenient / easy to promote HLP, thus hopefully gain more users, thus hopefully gain more modders.  :D

However, if the only way to add buttons is to intrude into people's privacy, I can see your point.  I'm pretty sure I've liked pages before that haven't asked for permissions though.  *shrugs*

EDIT:  If no button is possible, then how about just links to the FB and G+ pages?

I'd be okay with adding a link to the FB group and the google+ page under the 'external sites' tab of the link bar at the top of the page, but I'm with The E about the like/+1 button.

Different boards have different permissions in place. For this to work, it would only have to apply to topics/posts that are readable by guests. This would invoke unnecessary sql queries on each and every topic page load. Better yet, these queries should only be executed on topic views and nowhere else. All of this is very much doable, but is it worth the effort? I really don't think so.

In the long run the code would also be an annoyance to upkeep through forum upgrades. Which reminds me, HLP's still running RC5 with critical security vulnerability. Update has been available since Septermber 19th. 2.0 final with many bugfixes was released on June 12th.

Better place for such like buttons would be the mainpage where news would be stored. I don't have much faith on the mainpage Sandwich has been working on since forever ever actually getting finished though.

I say I bit off more than I should have. :p Progressive development is how I should have done it, instead of grandiose plans for an all-encompassing site that had every feature under the sun.

It also doesn't help that we still don't have a solid reason to have a frontpage. :p

EDIT: As for the FB/G+ buttons, the thought crossed my mind a few days ago. I'd like to figure out how to add them to specific posts though, not just to the entire domain. :p

EDIT 2: I use :p a lot... :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Very well said.

It also doesn't help that we still don't have a solid reason to have a frontpage. :p
Indeed. Which is why I've always been against a full blown mainpage. The forums, wiki and mantis cater to pretty much all needs of the community. There's really not a whole lot a full blown mainpage could offer and it always rises to question who's going to maintain it? By the way, is anyone keeping those up to date in order to patch up probable security issues just like what SMF RC5 CURRENTLY has? Don't leave yourself vulnerable to vandalism.

I would suggest have the code execute only on the Announcements board if possible.

The only reason I can think of to have a good frontpage is to have a nice neat step-by-step guide to installing FSOpen.
