Math*s* is cool.

It very clearly states "Math is cool". Doesn't matter how all you people over seas say it, FS2 says Math.  :P

As a follow up, If you're going to say it that way, shouldn't it be "Maths are cool" following the logic of pluralization?

Nope, cos it's an abbreviation of Mathematics. :P

Mathematics is stiill plural. Atleast by the logic that it is a collection of methods to derive information, etc. If it wasn't, there would be no reason to keep the s.

I would think there would only ever be one or 2 wings of a squad out at a time. Or that a squad may consist of 12 active pilots, but I would also think that not all pilots would be active, meaning perhaps 24 pilots in a squad, but only 12 active at a time.

Fair enough, you got me. Why do Americans say Math then without the 's'? (Perhaps this incredible debate warrants a seperate thread) :)

Honestly? I think we just like screwing with the English language. Or we just treat Math like we do Sheep or Fish. Probably both.

I think it's more that most people treat the word "Mathematics" in the singular sense, as a school subject.  We think of it in the same vein as History or Science or what-have-you, so the abbreviation is singular.

Maths is hard for someone with a lisp to say.

That's the sole reason we don't use it. And that's SCIENCE.

Isn't Mathematics a singular form?

"maths" sounds like hicks trying to talk about educated things.  it's not natural.  (for those who may not be aware, adding an S to the end of words that aren't plural is fairly common hick/redneck/hillbilly speech pattern.  e.g., "i'm goin down to the walmarts to give my yunguns a ass whippin'!"

and it just rolls off the tongue easier without the s.

I think it's pretty common in England to use the term "maths". It's just one of those regional things. It has nothing to do with being a hick or uneducated.

In general, I recommend you always try to read filler text.. especially in a few of my ANI remakes..

I seem to remember the Knossos portal having "A really big antique" in the original ani.

Re: Squadrons - 12, 16, or 24 fighters?
Back to the topic:

There's a couple things to remember about the number of fighters on a ship:

There are always some that are out of service for some reason or another.

There are probably more pilots per squadron than fighters available (not in service).

I usually figure there are 20 pilots per squadron, 16 are deployable at any given time, and even then 12 are usually all a ship will deploy, keeping 4 in reserve or as part of the CAP.  The remaining 4 pilots are training or resting, and all pilots rotate through the 3 stations (deploy, reserve, rest) on a regular basis.  But that's my thinking.
