Was 50/50 if this was best here or in fan fiction

Just found this which is a cool looking name generator for characters, locations, ships, planets and stars (it also has fantasy/mythology functions) and figured it might be useful for ppl who run out of ideas for naming stuff in their mods and stuff

I tend to use names of French town around where I live for ships, at least in BP Multi missions. Noone complained so far. Probably because noone noticed.

People are stupid, therefore anything popular is at best suspicious.

Mod management tools     -     Wiki stuff!     -     Help us help you

666maslo666: Releasing a finished product is not a good thing! It is a modern fad.

SpardaSon21: it seems like you exist in a permanent state of half-joking misanthropy

Axem: when you put it like that, i sound like an insane person

bigchunk1: it's not retarded it's american!
bigchunk1: ...

batwota: steele's maneuvering for the coup de gras
MatthTheGeek: you mispelled grâce
Awaesaar: grace
batwota: oh right :P
Darius: ah!
Darius: yes, i like that
MatthTheGeek: the way you just spelled it it means fat
Awaesaar: +accent I forgot how to keyboard
MatthTheGeek: or grease
Darius: the killing fat!
Axem: jabba does the coup de gras
MatthTheGeek: XD
Axem: bring me solo and a cookie

The names are a little weird, especially for places, but I'm sure there're plenty there that will work just fine. That site also contains a planet terrain generator (it's not outstanding, but it works well) and a bunch of other generators stuff.

You would.

So far I've been naming things after weapons.

Namely swords.
21:20:19   SpardaSon21: "hey baby, want to get a good look at my AC/20?
21:20:26   Spoon: I'd hit it like the fist of steiner

Some people are like Slinkies.  They aren't really good or even useful for anything but they always manage to put a little smile on your face when you give them enough of a push down the stairs.

Nice find there, this site may be useful for quick/ strange names.

I wonder why noone ever named ships after organs/ bodyparts...

"Mayday, Mayday...this is Alpha 2 for Command! Mission outcome doubtful...we were able to neutralize the Brain, but then the Ass jumped in.
I'm chasing a pair of Boobs, but have a Vagina in my Neck...damnit, noooo...Command we need reinforcements,NAO, the Liver just exploded...and the Kidney got wrecked..."

...on second thought, probably not the best idea.

I imagine that would have made poor Lieutenant Ash's last moments really awkward, yeah.

As far as star names are concerned, most major ones are derived from Arabic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Arabic_star_names is a good resource.

this'll save me a lot of trouble in naming fictional systems.

lol one of the names is already used in LOTR

does anyone find a perfectly white coloured main sequence star real?
i'm asking here because i tried the star generator and this got churned out on my first try.
and the actual example has an odd tinge so this pic is a better example.

Stars actually are white-ish.

The color comes mostly from movement and atmosphere.

i'll throw in that the color of a star, as seen from space without an atmosphere mucking things up, is almost entirely determined by its temperature.  cooler stars are redder, hotter stars are bluer.  even then, they're all mostly white, not the super-saturated spheres of red, yellow, and blue you see in artwork.  specific elements in the star (lithium, carbon, etc.) may add lines to the star's spectrum, but not enough to noticably change its color.

if you're really interested, more information can be found here...

How many characters for the name does the engine allow? 15 characters plus a space?

Additionally, for scientific data for a given star (which can be translated into color as well as used as a reference for a number of other things like nebula or planets) check the Stellar Database.
