Meanwhile in Iran...
...the populace just gave a gigantic CAPSLOCK "**** you" to Khamenei.  Well done.

Miracles happen. Let us wait however for what happens when the dust settles.

Re: Meanwhile in Iran...
I wouldn't call it a miracle. I would call it a CMOA for the Iranian people. They turned tables on the extremists and actually elected a guy that seems very reasonable, despite being pretty much a dictatorship up to this point. I love how extremists jumped on each others' throats when he got elected. :) Hats off to Iranian voters!

I had to google what the heck "CMOA" meant... But indeed, it's a great moment for the Irani.

Re: Meanwhile in Iran...
It's certainly a surprising success for parts of the iranian people, and it shows that the groups in power are more at odds with each other than many have believed before the elections, at least here in the west. Anyway, i'm still sceptical about that guy Rohani himself. After all, since he was actually approved beforehand as a candidate by the guardian council, i suppose he's not too far off opinion wise. We'll see what his election actually means to the iranian people (and of course foreign policies).

Re: Meanwhile in Iran...
As someone pointed out a decade ago, we're talking about hardliners and reformists as if they're really separate things, but the methodology used to vet candidates in Iran and the relative power of the President vs. the Supreme Council for the Defense of the Faith means they're actually all hardliners of different stripes.

The other thing is this an encouragement for more sanctions rather than a reason to relax them. If they're producing a realignment, and we don't really know that yet, then it's not over yet.
