Re: Pacific Rim (Split from WHIYL)
The official novelization mentions conventional assets against kaiju, actually.  The first kaiju takes three distinct strikes to take down, and the area made totally uninhabitable by its remains encompasses most of the San Francisco area, with zones of contamination stretching much farther.  The site is also, for some reason, the jaeger graveyard.

Specifically mentioned are tanks and their cannons, which do **** all, and Hellfire missiles, which are mentioned as being able to "hurt", but unable to take one down.

Granted, I doubt the author was quite the authority on state of the art first-world militaries, but it still seems rather more wasteful to send an entire army group that won't be able to do all that much at all against a monster that can much more effectively (and much more badass-edly) be demolished with a giant robot.

Re: Pacific Rim (Split from WHIYL)
And before anyone starts complaining that "oh well conventional arms couldn't possibly be that ineffective", please look up the square cube law. This kind of nitpicking should be reserved for works that are trying to be realistic (World War Z springs to mind).
The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of Hell.

Aye, once you can get past that, your disbelief should be suspended securely a few miles in the air by a titanium skycrane.

Big O?
Big O:

As the picture might suggest, it's pretty much the only mecha series I've seen where the mechs move like ponderous, 100-meter-tall behemoths, as opposed to jumping and dashing all over the place.  Even before I read the reference, the Jaegers felt like an absolute dead-ringer to it.  The piston-powered punches helped too. :D

Am I the only one here who was like "WTF lol...?!?" then the Jaeger used a sword to slice through that flying Kaiju? They should have used it much earlier!

The square-cube law article was interesting reading, PH. The kaiju's properties and traits are then vacuously true.
