Absolutely it would be possible to make it. In fact, it might even be relatively straightforward compared with nebula type boxes. You'd need to make a big sphere in Max (or Blender or whatever I guess) and then apply a Shivan or Vishnan esque tilemap to it - probably at fairly low opacity and relatively high repeats. You'd then need to apply a series of other textures layered over on top of it at equally low opacities with decreasing tiling repeat counts. This will, in part, minimize the overtiling effect. You'll probably also want to play with exactly how the overlays work, depending on how sophisticated the software is.
Once you've got it looking okay, stick your camera inside the sphere somewhere and render in the 6 cardinal 3d directions at the correct FoV settings (I don't know them, but they're on the board somewhere).
Voilà, Shivan dyson sphere. If you ever wanted to,get more detail, you're looking at vast amounts of work, but I suspect a basic but still decent one could be knocked together in a fairly quick and straightforward manner.
