The version of the root VP in there is fine. The executable is cracked of course so it shouldn't be used.

Re: Freespace (win7 64bit) - Return of a Newby
Im going to ask a silly question now. FS1 how do I get it to run in FSport? I cant see an exe to attach too the launcher...

secondly in Fs2 the opening video seems to be a bit pixelated and slow, is this cos I don't have the best version or have I got somethings in the wrong place?
But great for getting stuff working for me everyone, very greatful...

Re: Freespace (win7 64bit) - Return of a Newby
FSPort is a conversion of FS1 game data files into a form that can be used in the FS2 Open game engine.

You don't "run" FS1 in FSPort. FSPort is FS1, it just uses the new game engine. You use it by activating FSPort as a mod, and then run FS2_Open normally. You should see the FS1 menu instead of the default FS2 menu, and then you should have the FreeSpace: The Great War campaign available in the Campaign Selection.

Does that answer your question?
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

bloomin eck kara!
bows down in the presence.

By the way my missus is going mental for me having the temerity of trying to play games on my pc!

by the way, any use trying to play with a saitek rumble pad...or better to stay with keyboard

Re: Freespace (win7 64bit) - Return of a Newby
Now wouldn't it be nice if we only had a new 'installer'?

Which control medium you use is up to you. I love my joystick, but QuantumDelta swears by the keyboard and he's very good with it. Try out everything and see what works for you. Saitek hardware can usually be made compatible with everything, so it should work fine with Freespace.

ta.

So the FS2 video that always runs...before I get to the flight deck, shouldn't I be getting the FS1 opening scenes? anyone?

If you're not getting the FS1 intro video, you're not running FSPort properly (or you didn't install it properly, I suppose). If you want to make it easier to diagnose what the problem is, Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

You are missing odeon_fs1.vp, which contains the cutscenes.

Also (unrelated to the problem at hand) those tango_hi#_fs1.vp go in fsport-mediavps if I am not mistaken.

so I just add them to the data movies folder. where are the originals? and will it choose the originals over these?

Re: Freespace (win7 64bit) - Return of a Newby
The original are in one of the base VP files (I forget which one).  Any files not in a VP and placed in data/movies will take precedence over files inside a VP.

Re: Freespace (win7 64bit) - Return of a Newby
So it doesn't appear that I can use the game pad I've got. What about joysticks?

Currently got an st50 with gameport connection but need to either get a USB stick or sound card....
What do you think?

Re: Freespace (win7 64bit) - Return of a Newby
There are a couple of threads about this, but basically Windows 7 does not support gameports.  There are gameport to USB adapters available but I have read mixed results on them and didn't want to spend the money for something that might not work for my setup (or tech knowledge), so you would probably be better off getting a new USB stick.  Sad, really - I would love to use my old gameport version of the Microsoft Force Feedback Pro.

There are also several threads about joystick selection and setup, covering the range from budget sticks to multi-hundred dollar HOTAS setups.  Here is one of the more recent threads: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83288.0

For that specific thread, you're actually in luck if you don't mind possibly doing a bit of home electronics work.  Someone in the Descent community developed a custom gameport-to-USB adapter for the MS Sidewinder 3D Pro, and later expanded it to a few other sticks in that line, including the Force Feedback Pro.  Here's the thread dedicated to the original adapter, and this one goes through a successful attempt to get force-feedback working again; I'm not sure exactly what's involved with that beyond the basic board design though.
