I decided to start playing freespace2 again for the I don't know how manyth time. I have over time been spoiled (is that the right word?) by modern games with all their big teams and re-hashed design models. With star citizen coming out I sort of want to play a space sim, a good space sim, so it was natural to turn here.
I completely played through freespace1 and was a bit disappointed because for the first time it started to show its age on me. Don't get me wrong, it was fun and all, but the missions were much more straightforward than I remember. The plot sort of feels like "and then this happens... and then this happens..." and it sort of drags 3/4 of the way through. I know the plot like the back of my hand and tried to predict the next mission in the campaign sequence. Had some fun doing that. The ending is still thrilling to me so it has not completely lost its charm.
So i'm playing freespace2 now and i'm having fun with it. I am surprised how much happens in only the first few missions. "Lion at the door" and the Shivan invasion comes really quick. The Bosch monologues are as entertaining as ever. Maybe this time I will see what the fs1 vs fs2 debate was all about. (I was firmly in the fs1 camp before this playthrough but don't derail my thread!)
Anyone else pick up fs1 or fs2 after a long hiatus? Any different experiences from what you remember?
