Yup, when something is obviously going to serve no purpose whatsoever. Often used when referring to Politicians

Well, I think it'd actually be really useful. You can sell it complete with a tea bag, a paper cup, a small bottle of water and a chemical warming mat. Tea and chocolate MRE! It'd likely be a hit among British and Americans alike.

My mother has used the phrase "as useful as a chocolate teapot" many times during my life, so this topic was right up my alley. I smiled wide when I saw it.

My (American) grandma used to say "useful as a back pocket on a t-shirt".

"As much use as a chocolate fireguard" is another saying. No idea if we Brits have got dibs on it or not, but that's another one that's been thrown out a few times in my family.
