Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
I'm new here, so will someone point me to a step-by-step guide on how to properly install and run FSO on Windows 8?

There isn't one for Windows 8.  There's one for generic Windows, but it involves more steps than simply running the installer.

The installer should run on Windows 8 if you've installed Java; just double-click on it.

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
Got it. I wound up using the installer, but I'm wondering if I chose the right pathway. I installed it in C:/users/willi_000/Steam/steamapps/common/Freespace 2. What do I do from there?

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
There are several threads on the Steam boards which describe what to do in explicit detail, if that's what you want.  Try here or here.

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
Thank you. I was able to launch FSO, but three things happened: MediaVPs_2014 failed to install, when I launched Inferno, it said my profile was incompatible with the mod, and when I tested a mission in the tech room, I was given an error message saying 32 ship classes failed to load.

In that case I would recommend asking for help from the various mod makers.  I'm moving your posts to the FSO Support board.

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
It would help if you would please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
Ok, here's the debug log on my notepad. Towards the end, where the ships and weapons begin showing up, I was at the loading screen for the "untitled" mission in the INFR1 tech room. I went ahead and quit early since I was getting these same error messages, albeit different ships and objects, and the loading progress wasn't even past the first "bar".

MediaVPs_2014 failed to install

What do you mean exactly?

Just in case you mean what I think you mean, MediaVPs 2014 is only compatible with FreeSpace Open 3.7.2 RC4.
Why do you say "as" instead of "because"?

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
Err.

Code: [Select]
-mod inf1,mediavpsI can't recall INFR1's requirements and couldn't quickly find anything on the Inferno board, but it may have required the 3.6.10 MediaVPs back in the day. And right now the game tries to find them in the \mediavps\ directory, which you don't have. You can open the mod.ini file in the inf1 directory with a text editor and change that line to say
Code: [Select]
  -mod inf1,Mediavps_2014and see what happens.

Code: [Select]

If it's not too much trouble, cut and paste your FS2 installation somewhere else, like C:\Games\FreeSpace2\ for example.

User directories shouldn't subject to UAC (unless it's for a different user, of course); the problem with them used to be over-long path names, which stopped being a problem when that was bumped after the Steam release.

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
Oh, right. It was probably causing weird issues even in the XP era when some people installed FSO somewhere in their user directories. I'm just generally allergic to installing things in the user directory, but if FSO works there now, I won't judge anyone.

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
I tried running INF1 again. Even managed to get a few missions in, but during the 2nd shivan mission in the campaign the game crashed. Here's my debug file.

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
Edit mod.ini in inf1 folder

This:
Code: [Select]
secondrylist = mediavps;should look like this:
Code: [Select]
secondrylist = ;

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
INF1 doesn't require MediaVPs?  I thought it required 3.6.8 or somesuch.  (I forget now).

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
Last time when I installed INFR1 from these links:
http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.95
http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.353
there was no mod.ini in folder and it worked good.

Re: Curtnik88 installs FreeSpace
Yeah, back then you had to manually put in the string -mod infr1,mediavps

Now they have the mod.ini to do that for you.  Still, it is possible they also upgraded inf1 to not depend on mediavps.

Reading this http://inferno.hard-light.net/R1U/FAQ.htm  -- It seems maybe they made it standalone.  Then it would depend on the edition of INFR1 you have; apparently the SCP version doesn't need MVPs.
