3DFX games run great on nGlide, also, JoyToKey
http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide

Compatibility list: http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide/compatibility

Been using it for Rogue Squadron 3D, on a lark, installed GOG's FS1 and booted that to Glide.  Make sure you launch the config and set the resolution you want and the aspect ratio.

Also found some shareware (unlimited trial, $7 to buy) JoyToKey (lets you map joystick / controller input to mouse axis / keyboard inputs, as well as mapping multiple buttons on a joystick to a new "button", switching joystick layouts on the fly with special assigned buttons, etc, etc, it's great).

As far as I'm concerned I use a PS3 joypad with motioninjoy, it's free and I find the PS3 joypad to be a reliable controller. With it you can also configure your pad to mouse and/or keyboard input, allowing you to bind almost all of FS2 commands to a simple pad ;) by using the shift/alt features. Of course you won't be able to do the same with a joystick with this program (it's only designed for PS3 controller) but if you don't have one and have a play 3 at home it can prove useful!

I'll keep that in mind for when I get a PS3 (only have a Wii {free gift}, a PS2 {thrift shop} and an XB360 {free gift} ATM, and don't really get to play them, lol!)   Oh and I have some PS1s I picked up for around $10 on eBay.  Next on my to-get list:  N64 {still pretty expensive for its age}

I use this for several old games. dgVoodoo is another good one. The Glide games are easier to get running than D3D games from the same era, and in some cases the wrappers offer better compatibility than even the actual 3dfx cards did.

For FS1 though, the software mode actually looks better since it's the only one that supports high resolution textures. Glide tops out at 256x256 textures, and D3D also lacks the glowmap effects.
