we're not arguing Sandwich, we're discussing :)

I personally think anything done in Java would be better in Flash (which is Javascript based)

Never said you were arguing. Taking potshots ain't quite the same.... it's generally more violent. ;)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

No it isn't. Not even remotely. It does use ECMAScript as its scripting language, but that was only introduced as of version 5.

tell me one thing done in Javascript and i'll bet i can better it in Flash!

Javascript:  oooooh, a rollover image

EDIT:  http://www.xeofreestyle.com/2000/  - Flash 4
and http://www.xeofreestyle.com/2002/ - Flash MX

try doing the flash 4 one in javascript.  or www.whosme.com  check that out!  i mean, overall, anything... ANYTHING you can display on a webpage with javascript you can do better in Flash

EDIT:  It's my mistake... i thought you were saying Javascript was better than Flash (which it isn't)... but you were saying Java is different than Javascript, (which you're right... it is)

I meant that Javascript is somewhat similar to Java in the way it's set up with the "{" and the ("whatever"); etc.
Java is very different to Javascript, i know that

Coffee Cup Firestarter - Exports to SWF files, much MUCH easier than flash.  If you want Flash effects without learning Flash, then this is what you need

SwIsH - Try it :)

Flash 5/MX/etc Demo - Semi-functional

Java is NOT Javascript...
Every Java Applet is a separate program...
Depending on a programmer's skill, a java applet can be much worse to much better than flash...
Don't underestimate the power of Java...
A good programmer can make serious work with it...

Your talking of two seperate things handled and processed in two entirely different ways. Java is not great nor is Javascript due to it being a resource hog, but flash still takes some resources to run too.

Flash is better, but not for everything.

don't make me look like an idiot.  i just SAID that they're two different things!!!

Flash uses hardly any resources... sure it's best used on a fast computer, but what can you POSSIBLY do in Javascript that you can't do in Flash?  a roll-over button perhaps?

also, Flash can have great movie quality and length, etc. and a very small file size!

One script i like to use is a preload image script made in Java, with small GIF images. Why go through the hell of flash to make fancy push down buttons when i can use a small script with 12 really small (3 to 10KB each) buttons?

Trust me, doing it in flash is far more time consuming then straight in HTML with Javascripting.

Ever heard of Dreamweaver? LOL it makes Java scripts for you at the click of a button.

BTW im just here stating my opinion and commenting. Im not trying to make anyone look foolish just having a nice back and forth with some HLP dudes. If i insulted you and made you look bad I apologize for that is not my goal here. Only to help give a more rounded opinion in this here post.

:D Guys give it up, just face it Java has some good areas, Javascript has more good areas but flash 5 and MX just have a much wider scope but you may as well say that neither of the codes that exist can't exactly live without each other and anyway this is a rather pointless argument...

i didn't say it was easier... i said it's better (it looks better too)

oh, and Max... we're not talking about java, we're only talking javascript and flash :)  Flash is based on Javascript, so...
