MVE files played from hard drive? (or: where to buy FS2?)
My Disc 2 of FS2 is scratched up pretty badly and doesn't work very well anymore. More often than not, the cutscenes won't read off of it. I've got the MVE files on my hard drive, though the game won't detect them.

Is it possible to make them work somehow?

Alternately, because I know that question could sound pirate-like, Here's some proof:

pic 2

(yeah, I'm a geek.)

But, on the chance that there is still a doubt (and I wouldn't be offended in the least if there is), could someone suggest to me a place where I can buy another copy of the game online? Someplace with a reasonable price, which means Amazon.com is out of the running.

I'm usually able to find this kind of stuff at CD Access but it seems that they've only got copies of FS1. (Of which my copy still works just fine, and I'm going to be messing around with those hi-res textures in just a little bit.)

Thanks,

By the way, reciprocity looks amazing! Can't wait to try that out.

You could try coping the mve files into the freespace2 dir, it might look for them there first. You could just make a copy of the CD yourself.

Depends how badly scratched it is. Probably to bad for real time streaming of video but you may be able to make a copy if you do it slow enough.

now lets make this proper.

Exits are to the rear and the left, in case of emergency, flamethrowers are located under the seats. They are filled with the good ol' H2O, but... well, no buts.

And if you see a five-legged insectoid with a built in plasma cannon running around in the air ducts, then that is either Carl or a foreign Shivan. Either way, run like hell.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of copying it. Figuring that it wouldn't work in-game I just assumed that it wouldn't work at all. I'll have to try that. I'll let you know if that works.

Thanks for the welcome. Though, should I be more afraid of Carl, or the Shivan? Has anyone tried dousing either with the H2O that you speak of? Works for me in a pinch.

edit - Copying the disc didn't seem to work. I did get it to read all the way through once, but got an error when it was burning the new disc.

Any other ideas?

Well there is software out that will read MVE files and make them a .exe file that you can use that way.....but thats completely illegal, its interplay's copyright if I'm not mistaken

Though I'm sure some people around here still might have it... I personally don't, lost it with a hard drive format a LONG time ago.

[edit]An idea, it might work

If you have the MVE files on your hard drive, try renaming one to intro.mve and placing them into your FreeSpace2 folder, and start the game... that should work, playing the movie as the intro.

What's the biggy? I have 2 copies of the gold edition CD-ROMs (The first I bought whenb it first came out, so the first CD got too scratched to use, and I had to re-install it, so I bought a new bunch)

MVE files played from hard drive? (or: where to buy FS2?)
Black_Dragon - yeah, I checked Gamestop and EB world earlier. I work for gamestop and I know we don't carry it anymore and, to my dismay, neither does EB. Interplay doesn't even have it in their online store, although FS1 and ST are bundled there for only $10. Eb.com is Encyclopedia Brittanica's website. I don't think they sell video games.:)

"Gold edition" discs? Yeah, I bought FS2 the day it came out. I'm really kicking myself for not picking up multiple copies, or a copy of the 'sim of the year' edition when I had the chance.

I've tried renaming the files, but the game won't even find the intro movie. I can't run anything from the tech room (insert CD #2 or #3 depending on which file I'm trying to run) and the intro won't play at all when I launch the game - it just skips to the player select menu.

I'm considering bidding on one of the copies on Ebay, but I'm not a big fan of auctions. Still, if it comes down to it... gotta have my FreeSpace.

Any other ideas?

For the intro to play you need CD #2 in the CD Drive when you start it up, I believe.

Also, do you have ICQ? I have an FS Source release that might help you in this area...
[edit]actually, nevermind...volition took out the MVE stuff in the source release, @%*@ them[/edit]

It might be possible to mess around with the cutscene.tbl and pursuade FS2 to work with the MVE's on the hard drive and disk 3 in the drive.

I buy lego stuff from there all the time. :D Usually as long as the seller has some good feedback, you should be okay.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

cutscene.tbl? That's in one of the VP files, right? Well, I guess it's off to download that VP view program then. Hadn't thought of messing with those, but it could work. Hmm.

The first download every fs2 fan should get is .vp view. You can't do any MODing without it. After you get .vpview, then download the patch.

MVE files played from hard drive? (or: where to buy FS2?)
Well, I tried altering the table file but it doesn't seem to work. VP View worked fine and viewing the file with the tbl viewer worked okay (although I had to edit the file with notepad.)

The line in the table specifies a disc number that the cutscenes are on. I tried changing it to the game directory on the hard drive, but that didn't work, I would click the 'play cutscene' button in the tech room and nothing happened. Changing the file name didn't do it either. I also tried changing both but no luck there.

I'm really wondering why the game isn't for sale? I mean, FS1 is ten bucks at the Interplay store, why not FS2?

When the source code was released, fs2 was taken off the shelves. To think I bought my second copy weeks before they would be gone forever!! So close:D
