Umm... Hecate and Hatshepshut does have mainly direct beams. Deimos does have slashers. Direct beams are the ones tomcat spoke about. And Shivans does have only direct beams (originally, unless you have made new ones or downloaded Shivan slashers).

So, you have had them all the time. :p

The beams just have a very narrow FOV.
Be warned: This site's admins stole 100s of hours of my work. They will do it to you.

No, I meant a beam that fires ONLY DIRECT FOWARD, no tracking ability (like a primary on a fighter, but only a beam). That would ba a ULTRA-beam.

Big difference between hiding against ocean or land and hiding in the void of space.  I'd go for reflective paint (for diffusion of laser weapons) over any camo paint job myself.  And besides, I'd think that reflective hulls would reflect a natural-looking starfield most of the time anyway.

Anyway. Reflective surfaces don't work in FreeSpace- make that sucker black.

LOL, don't forget to put the rosary on the ship, too! ;) :D

Hard to believe I actually used to be Catholic...I've never even been baptized. Thank God for my Dad's foresight! :D

Now that would make an interesting paint scheme! I agree, go ahead and try black.

EDIT: Knight Templar, you're obviously a Spanish speaker. FYI, I'm from Argentina originally, but I live in the States now. Which country are you from? :)

The only problem with that would be that the attacker ship just needs to look for an image of itself to see where to fire. :D

But theoretically, the lasers would bounce off and hit the attacker. Though I think the fs universe uses pulse weapons. Kind of a combination of light and heat. Mirrors wouldn't reflect them.

EDIT: And besides, who attacks a capital ship with lasers? Most people just launch a rack of Helios.

Well, mirror shielding prolly won't work because of the millions of mini-particles and asteroids that float around at very high speeds - it'll scratch the paint too much.

Yeah, but with the in-game lighting, it won't just be plain vanilla black - it'll be all sorts of different shades of black! Yays!

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"Vanilla black"?

But he's probably right. In fact, if it doesn't work, you can just make it a very dark gray, and it will most certainly work. Put some more detailed pipey textures on the interior parts (the bit with the antennae, anywhere else that wouldn't be armored), for a bit of visual interest, and you've got a stealth destroyer.
