and kasperl an admin needs to recognize that spamming and cursing are things that people will always do.  If you want to eliminate those from serious topics then make one area of your board where people are allowed to do those things.  N00bs never read rules   so post about this in your index forum descriptions ("Spam/profanity is/is not allowed here") as well as in your rules.  When you see material that is profane or irrelevant to a particular area's category just move it to the spam area.  If someone repeatedly does this to the point where you waste too much time cleaning up their crap then warn them.  If they persist or respond maliciously then they don't care about your board, your members, or your time so ban them.

Well, here's the rules I laid down when I modded @ spacebattles....though I've updated them since the last time they were written was back in early 2001.

1. Spam.  I don't mind the occasional joke thread or something thats really amusing but don't make a habit of posting every damn joke you find in its own thread or something.  Also, posting just to increase your postcount is not tolerated.  Doing so will result in a deduction of 100 posts for each +1 post.  Repeat violations will result in a two-week ban.

2. Flaming.  As long as it doesn't get too bad, I'll turn a blind eye.  However, racial insults is one thing that I have zero tolerance for.  I'll ban your ass on the spot.  If you can't keep a cool head (ie: flaming every post) then I'll leave a warning to cool it.  If you continue, then I'll close the thread and leave you a second warning in your PM box or e-mail inbox if you don't have PMs enabled.  If you insist on continuing, I will ban you for two weeks.  After that time, you will be on probation for an additional month.  Keep it up, and you're gone for good.  I will not tolerate trolls harassing members.

3. Warez.  This is something that I will not have on my forum.  Talk about this elsewhere.  I will only give one warning, and this is it.  Discuss it here (as far as providing links to such websites, etc.  I don't mind if you're *discussing* the TOPIC of warez.) and you get the boot.

4. Pornographic material.  Again, I have zero tolerance for porn on this forum.  There are underage members here and I do not appreciate such material being posted here.  There are plenty of other places to discuss such material.  Go find one.

5.  If you have a problem with any moderator, please go by the following guidelines:

a. Contact the moderator in question privately and try to resolve things in a civil manner.

b. If you cannot resolve the issue, contact a Super-moderator and explain the problem WITHOUT resorting to flaming the moderator in question. (You'll find that this works quite well when trying to solve personal problems.)

c.  If you STILL can't get it taken care of, contact one of the board administrators.  They are the supreme authority and the entire staff must listen to them if they want to keep their jobs.

Do NOT post your gripes in a new thread.  I will delete it on sight and not give it a second thought.  If a second post is made, you will be banned.


Please note that the forum I modded used vBulletin software (same software this forum uses) so the particular board you have may not have the ability to grant members Super-moderator capability.  The only other forum software that does this out-of-the-box is phpBB.  There may be others, but I haven't had any experience with other software (other than UBB 5.x, vB 1.x & 2.x, and phpBB 1.4.x) so I couldn't tell you.

If you create a close community and get to know everyone personally - especially from an admin (vertical) perspective (lateral relations are even better, but you can't directly get people to be friends), and educate everyone (so they won't do anything overtly stupid), adminning becomes very easy - no-one really wants to abuse the system because they share it with people who have become their respected friends and colleagues.

I think that's the best way to do it, personally - disciplinary actions, while a crucial part of any admin outfit, are more of a fallback rather than the principal way to create a good community. When you push people too much and for the wrong reasons (or for no given reason at all except 'admin purposes'), people either push back or leave - neither of which is really desirable.
