You have a CD in the CD drive, don't you...

because occasionally it will play CDs without a program, and the only way to change tracks is press the ">>" button on the CD drive, if you know what i mean.  also if you have CDs set to play (autorun) then they start automatically at startup

also, what do you have as your default MP3 player... are you sure these are MP3s?

No, they only have .mp3 as a file type for fun.

I don't use my MP3 player for CDs.

don't make me look like a fool Shrike, that's not nice when someone's trying to help you.  I'm not the one that's asking for help.  When someone helps you, you don't act sarcastic.

you said:

My computer is playing MP3s without me having an MP3 player running, or indeed any sign of an active process in my task manager.

My question was how do you know they're MP3s!?  For all you know they could be OGG, WMA, MP1s, anything.  If it doesn't show you what's playing, you don't know what it could be.
I'll ignore your sarcasm and keep trying to help.

1)  Is it playing songs you have on your computer?  or music you've never heard before.
2)  Do you have a CD in your drive
3)  What program is set to play Mp3s by default?  what program do you use to play Mp3s (if different from default)
4) What OS

And about a dozen posts down, when asked if it was repeating the same songs, I said:

Yeah, it plays the list I had in winamp when I closed it earlier.
I know they were MP3s because I had been listening to them earlier.  I turned off Winamp and the speakers, left, then when I came back (a couple hours later) and turned on the speaker, ready to play more music, the MP3s I had been listening to before were playing.

You're the one who's assuming I'm ignorant and that I wouldn't know what they were.  I specifically said MP3s because it was MP3s I have.  If it had just been random stuff I'd have said sound or music.

ok, i stand corrected on the part about not knowing the winamp playlist (on a thread 3 pages long at the time, which has moved from helping you (for about 10 posts) to lesbians, i just looked at the first post, and tried to help from there)... but nonetheless, you should try to appreciate people who're trying to help you.

one sec, let me try some stuff.

Well, it's been rebooted, so it's sort of irrelevant now..... just a weird event in my life.  One of many.

don't lock the thread yet, i'm going to post the answer here in a few minutes or hours anyway, so if this ever comes up again you can look here.

so it's gone permanently?  it disappeared?  i hope the problem didn't just happen once, and disappeared when you rebooted once

How often do I reboot?  Good question.  Not too often actually.  'Weekly' level I'd say.  Winamp is V3.0.  And I don't remember what the agent is.

Shrike:

System specs please!
(including: Windows OS, sound card/chip details, DirectX version)

Does the problem exist with both WaveOut and DirectSound Output plugins?
(Winamp -> Prefs -> Plugins -> Output)

Have you installed the official wa2update patch for all latest versions of the default input/output plugins?

:)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
