Stumbled upon this over at VW.

Interplay representative on subject of Freespace 2:
Unfortunately we do not have any replacement CD's available for this game. It has been out of print for some time, and the games popularity quickly depleted our replacement stash.

I thought they depleted the stash themselves due to unpopularity. For example, they never properly advertised it leading the community to believe that Interplay made themselves sell FS2 so poorly, but if they ran out due to popularity, isn't there some kind of logic flaw? And shouldn't they be selling even more?

99.99999999% of the time a game that is more successful than otherwise anticipated is A) Kept in print as long as possible and B) a sequel (if appropriate) is comissioned.....

You will be happy to know, however, that we are planning on rereleasing this game in a limited edition. I don't know when this will happen, but it should be soon! Just keep your eyes on Interplay.com. We will definitely announce when it is back in the store.

We just had a meeting about it this morning. There will be 2000 copies available, and only through the Interplay store. They will be numbered copies and will be selling for $49.95. We will probaby start taking pre-orders in a couple weeks. We will be sending out an email announcement, and also plastering it all over the site when it goes into the store.

Err... this is terrible, terrible news . If this happens, FS2 instantly ceases to be abandonware... HotU becomes illegal, everything we've been telling people becomes wrong, Fractus' server becomes even more illegal... and all for 2000 copies available only from interplay's website? If it was 100,000 coopies, being released world wide, I'd be willing to take the loss, but 2000? This is... terrible...

But, with interplay, one of the key companies in the commercial release of FS2, taking interest in it again and selling it for profit, it just became out and out illegal
