those are the XWA models, the ones we do NOT have permission to use, and if lucasarts found out about them, they'd be in hot water...

Nope, we don't have permission...
Maybe the models are really that hard to convert, I don't know, but your textures are bad too. What's with the dents on the wings?
Its a TIE Interceptor, they're supposed to be angled.
I suppose that's the only really noticible thing.
And it's grey. TIEs except the ANH TFs are blue.
Blue? In the movies, games, and books, they are clearly black and grey...

we have permission to use some of xwaup stuff (darksaber's mainly), but we use it only if and when there isn't our own artwork instead.
We do this way cause we have the right to do this, since we and nobody else are working on it, and because I enjoy more doing stuff than converting other's stuff.
If you don't like it (and are the only one heard so far) or if you prefer something different, or you want more or other things than what we plan to do, you'll have to do it on your own.
BTW the TI is almost as inaccurate as xwaup's for the simple reason that it's based on it, it has a cyan/grey colour cuz I like it more than pure blue, being an average between the colour schemes of the 3 films, the dents are there for no other reason than I liked them when I did it, and in some points is even more accurate than xwaup's one (for example, what the egtv call sensor arrays).
So, althought as I said I'd like to remake those models in future, for the moment they'll stay as they are.

I have always thought TIEs are grey. . . pure metal!

IIRC in A New Hope they were completely white, sometimes grey sometimes cyan in Empire Strikes Back, almost blue in ROTJ

If you want to change the color of the TIEs, go into the stars.tbl, and add all suns the color you prefer.

IIRC, I was being somewhat distracted by my girlfriend when I posted that, so don't take it too seriously. I don't know what reference pic I was using, but it was obviously a bad one, I can see what you mean about the XWAUP ship, it's almost the same. It looks as though meticulous care was taken with some details, while others were changed for no good reason. The side panels are entirely inexplicable, they ought to be more hexagonal than octagonal, just like on the TIE Fighter.
Color, of course, is not really an issue. But certain people need to go and look at movie stills before making observations from memory, it's kind of annoying.
I don't see what you mean about the sensors, I assume you mean the ones to the sides of the cockpit. They are changed, but still erroneous.
I could go on...but I'm bored now.

Just remember kiddos, I'm not asking you to agree with my opinion or change anything, I just enjoy critiquing these things. :D
Isn't that why screens of your work are posted in individual threads? No point to saying "Woo! It's so great!" all the time just to raise your postcount.

Alan... you are missing a point, let me explain:
I never opened a 3d prog before starting the tf, and the TI is my second model.
To learn, I just picked the xwaup models and used them as reference.
What you are looking here are just optimized versions of what I did 3 years ago. I don't pretend in any way them to be BETTER than xwaup, and now I could make a job looking 10 times better, but nonetheless they still look good enough to be used.
Our politic is "use our own artwork whenever possible at the only condition that it looks good enough".
And it does look good enough in my (and not only mine) opinion.
That's our choice, and it is not debatable, but I'm sure you can guess our reasons.
What you said (almost) was "ehy it suck, xwaup's look better, go get it". And my reply was "ehy, if you don't like it and want xwaup's so bad, go convert it on your own".
Sorry if it sounded harsh, but as said that point is not debatable.

I have no problem talking about the artistic side instead, as I already did in the precedent reply.
The model is based on xwaup's one, I just reduced pcount.
The flaws it may have, are the same (almost) of xwaup's one, plus flaws coming from me being a sucking noob when I did it.

For example, you are right that the side element on the panels should be hexagonal, when they are octagonal, they are that way because xwaup's already had octagonal side elements, and I never verifyed that it was correct looking at official pictures.

The bumps on the panels were there to reproduce bumps already present in the reference model, but they came out different and in different positions. Nonetheless I liked and still like (almost) the result, so I leaved it as it was.

The sensors are those elements at the side of the cockpit (althought they are considered part of the engines in other sources).
They are correct (almost) the way I did them, go check here http://www.theforce.net/swtc/exhibit/tie.html while in the xwaup model they just are a textured cube attached there.

Other flaws? the hatch for example, it should be modelled but it isn't and the textures of the ball are made with planar uvmap instead of with spherical uvmap. This come by me copying the xwaup's one and not knowing how to unwrap when I built the model.
Also the lines on the ball are wrong (but they were wrong in the xwaup's one too), as many other minor details, and I could continue for more than you.
I am aware of those flaws but nonetheless it looks good, and the alternative, althought looking better and being more precise, it is not THAT better or THAT more precise to convince me using it.
I may instead consider the possibility to make in future a new model/textures more adherent to the ILM model, but for the moment we have more urgent things to do than to remake a model which already looks nice.
As said, sorry if sounded harsch when it wasn't my intention (ehm...almost:p)

Am I that poor at communication? My previous post was supposed to say "Oh, I'm a dumbass, look how bad the XWAUP one is, yours looks pretty similar." And the first post wasn't so much meant to say "it sucks" as "your other work is awsome, what's with this?" because I totally missed this post:
Quote

well I'm just in the process of optimizing and make minor changes to some old staff I made for vanilla fs2, btw... (heh, the tf and ti were my first 3d models ever... If I was going to remake em now you'd have seen some really major differences)

Now, if this post sounds like an insult, I think I'll just stop talking. Obviously I'm not very good at it.

Anyhow...

It wasn't immediately obvious from the pics I had how the sensors were different from the XWAUP, but I've gone and looked at the model and I can see that now. All I could see was that they were in the same position instead of hugging the window circle. Oh, and what source refers to those things as part of the engines? Never seen that before.

no problem in this Alan, really, it's over for me and absolutely no offense taken, hope it's the same for you.
you are well welcome to post here whenever you want for whatever you want.
Consider I also used this occasion to clarify things with everybody, not only you;)

about the source, it's something I read a lot of time ago, and I'm not sure where, probably swtc?
