That Mi26 might be one of the scariest aircraft I've ever seen, just for the sheer scale.

After the Apache (the single greatest rotor wing EVER), comes the Hind (in all its versions, not all have two bubble cockpits. some have a single bubble and an armor sheet) and the Cobra. I don't care what anyone says, the Cobra is beautiful and doesn't get enough recognition. :)

The Hokum/Werewolf, however, is like the Comanche: worthless, ugly wastes of money, manpower and training.

The Hokum can do anything the Apache does, with a single pilot and more armor :p
The Apache is famous for one thing: being used as a moving target. Was regarded highly until it was actually involved in battles, and then... :p

Actually, last I checked, the Hokum can't do the aerobatics the Apache is capable of, but that doesn't matter. The Hokum is a maintenance NIGHTMARE in ways the Apache never was, due to that incredibly fruity dual-mast linkage.

Most importantly, the Apache is a beautiful piece of gear, but the Hokum is an ugly beast that should never have been (like the Comanche, actually).

What can I say, I subscribe to the runway model of warfare. ;)

Well I can't quote figures for the russian helicopters but haven't the Americans lost a ridiculous number of apaches that weren't actually shot down?

Actually, last I recall, its the Blackhawks and Ospreys that have the largest non-combat casualty lists.

Well, when I was at Yeovilton, in the briefing for the underwater escape training thingy, several US Blackhawk pilots were present on a exchange program. They were asked how the Blackhawk floats - they answered 'like a manhole cover'. Draw your own conclusions...

Heh? I've personnally seen a Hokum ( at Le Bourget ) doing barrel rolls and loopings. I have yet to even hear about the Apache doing that.
As for the dual rotor thing, many russian helos use that setup, I believe that if it was that horrible they'd have given up on it.

And I personnally thing the Apache looks way less cool ( in fact,; it looks -and is- weak and fragile, whereas the Hokum looks strong and, well, manly :p ), but we both know you have sucky tastes, so I don't have any hard feeling for what you said ;)

Um, Venom, you might want to watch any American airshow where they fly an Apache. They do the barrel rolls, loops, backward somersaults and stuff, like... um... all the time. I grew up on US Army bases and watched them flying the things constantly. They can't FLY upside down, but basic aerobatics is pretty easy.

You know, the US Air Force kept the SR 71 in service for how many years, even though it was a maintenence nightmare? See, sometimes, the utility of the craft outweighs the maintenence problems in the long run. That's probably why they're willing to use the dual mast in so many models: the inherent stability and agility (which, indeed,  can be formidible) outweighs the problem the maintenence crews might have when they're working on it.
