He nerfed Solo, just to make it more kid friendly.  Han was of questionable character, that why he was willing to take Obi Wan, Luke and the rest on the rescue mission.  He was in it for the money.  Han Solo was not a nice man, until sometime after he met Luke Skywalker.

They changed it back again in the DVD's apparently.

They'd altered the Bar scene? Theres so many 'remixes' of it now it's like some regurgitated 80's Dance tune :(

If he alters the Bar Scene, he alters who Han Solo 'is', it's as simple as that, I know that penchant for 'shoot first, ask questions later' hero is dying out, but that is who Han Solo was, the story was as much about his 'finding his honour' (Luke would never have destroyed the Death Star if Han hadn't developed a sense of responsibility) as it was about Darth Vader and Luke.
