My thoughts exactly. :doubt:

Look, everyone. Nobody cares how many fake people signed an online petition demanding that a sequel to a 5 year old game be made.

Do any of you even realize how utterly pathetic it sounds that we have to even have this discussion?

Hmmm...I signed this already in September.

Some people just can't let it go.  I have to admit I'm one of those people. But this whole FS3 issue...so simple yet so complicated! Everyone —including myself— knows there won't be one, but we fail to stop dreaming. I don't know if that's to be admired or scolded.

I mean, isn't dreaming the reason why this community has existed for so long?

All of which makes me wonder - has petiononline.com actually ever changed anyone's mind... ever? I've seen at least two dozen of these things floating around on the internet and not a single one of them has ever seemed to do anything.]

Last week there was one for George Bush to get out of office... as I'm sure that will just convince him that being President was a bad career move, he should have never have quit his job at Burger King.

Yeah, it's my comic.

A large majority of the 'Veterans' in this thread just made themselves look like asses. Good job :doubt:.

Eh? By pointing out how futile this is?

Hey! Here's an idea! Let's all get in a car, drive to Champaign Il, and protest outside Volition's HQ until they promise to buy the rights from interplay, who hasn't expressed any wish to sell the,, and will probablt take it with them when they fall into oblivion!

Great idea! It's as sure fire a way to get them to do it as signing an online petition that nobody'll ever read!

So. Who's car will we take?

I doubt Triple Ace really thought it was actually going to make a difference, but rather was showing an example of how many people there are that would actually support said thing. Shouting stupid crap like 'Death by rat poison' or 'death by fire' or making sarcastic remarks has even less of a positive effect than talking straight out about 'protesting to Volition for FS3.'

Jet, when you've been here since, oh, 1998, when the first FS was made, you'll see how we have all gotten tired of practically every newbie and his grandmother posting about Freespace 3. So, we flame them, hoping, somehow, someway, that future newbies won't make the exact same mistake as practically every single newb that comes on these forums does: Not thinking and posting straight away about FS3.

In response to Marauder: Yes, this community has thrived on dreams, but the real thing that has kept us going, if you look at it, is our dedication to the game, and expanding it's content. IF we didn't o that, we would've let it die long ago.

I posted this on Sectorgame a little while ago. I think it sums up the reason why I personally don't like to see FS3 topics like this one.

Quote
The people in the community love Freespace. Talking about FS3 is like continually reminding someone about the death of a loved one. While the odd comment about them might be tolerated, continually talking about them is tactless and hurtful. It reminds them of their loss. Of all the things they'll never be able to do with the one they so dearly miss.
Remember that the community has talked about FS3 a lot. We've all expressed a sadness that it never happened. We've all managed to get past that grief. Some of us have even convinced ourselves that we're better off now.
So leave us our fond memories of FS3 in peace and don't continually intrude on the memory of what could have been.

Our dreams are what we make, not what we hope other people will make.

I got FS2 in 1999 (or around that time) and loved it. When I found out there wouldn't be an FS3, needless to say, I was pissed. But I got over it. You should, too. Flaming every curious newbie who asks about it is probably why few of them actually stick around :doubt:. It's unnecessary, childish, and rude. How hard would it be to type 'There won't be FS3, sucks, don't it.' instead of 'OMG STFU, Your making me upset!'

C'mon. Asking us here about FS3 is like asking your aunt who was forced to have a histerectomy because of ovarian cancer why she isn't having any more children.

You know I seriously thought the whole Freespace # subject was overwith? Why is it that it keeps getting brought up?

Like I said before, I was trying to be helpful in some way and maybe give people some hope but you don't have to make me look like a jackass.

I'd spend more time on Ferrium than FS3. Once its done, at the very least, if the original [V] developers actually wish to make it privately and without official support, then they wont have to worry too much about coding an entire new engine.......

Wait...did that just sound horribly wrong?

This isn't to make you look like a jackass. Hell, it isn't even about you anymore. It's about a subject that'll be a thorn in our foot forever.

That said... this thread should be locked.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
